In August, a variety of homemade vegetables ripen in full force in the garden, but gardeners pay especially close attention to tomatoes. Indeed, at this time, the tomato still has to be looked after, and at the same time, harvest from the bushes. And in some places the plants need help so that the fruits turn brown as soon as possible or stop the growth of an accelerating bush. In addition, we must not forget about protective measures, since pests continue to encroach on your crop, and pathogens are not asleep

New shoots: where to remove and which ones to leave?

At the end of the second decade of the month, it is necessary to take measures to stop the further growth of tomato bushes and the formation of new brushes. They still do not have time to ripen before the arrival of stable autumn cold weather, but they will pull the forces and nutrients from the plant onto themselves. To prevent this load distribution, the tops of the tall-stemmed varieties are cut off. This procedure is performed in such a way that two leaves remain above the flower brush, which by this time has already formed. In cases where tomato bushes formed into two or three stems, they are all pinched simultaneously.

However, there are exceptions to this rule. When the leaves on the tomato turned yellow, or there was such a nuisance as a disease that affected the state of the tops with significant damage, then pinching is not recommended. For full nutrition of ripening fruits, there must be a certain number of leaves on the bushes. And the newly formed specimens compensate for this damage, serving for the benefit of the tomatoes remaining on the bushes. However, new flower clusters on young shoots must be removed without regret.

What does the color of a tomato say?

Gardeners, who regularly remove unripe fruits from the bushes, significantly increase the overall yield. If such work is carried out at the stage of blanche ripeness, when the color of the skin becomes yellowish-brown or starting to turn white, then the tomatoes left in the light will ripen quickly and this will not negatively affect the quality of the crop.

At the same time, the taste of fruits taken from the plant in a green form and left for independent ripening differs markedly from those that ripened directly on the plant. They are more acidic, and chemical analysis is more likely to show a lower content of sugars, vitamins and other substances. Therefore, it is advisable to remove the fruits completely immature only as a last resort. In addition, it is not recommended to consume them fresh. Such products are fermented or heat treated with further conservation.

Fertilizing with potassium chloride and sodium chloride will help speed up ripening and increase the sugar content of tomatoes. It is carried out in the full fruiting stage. For this, 1 table. a spoonful of each substance is diluted with 10 liters of water. Fertilizer is applied at the root. One bush requires 0.5 liters of top dressing.

Storing tomato crops

There must be good ventilation in the storage room for tomatoes. Before storing the crop, the room and racks must be disinfected. If ripening is planned here, the temperature must be maintained at + 12 ° C.

For ripening, tomatoes are removed from the bush along with the stalks. They are placed in boxes so that the stalks are directed upward. To extend the shelf life of fresh fruits, they are not removed from the bush, but the whole plant is completely pulled out of the ground and sent for storage in this form. The bushes can be placed on shelves or hung from the ceiling with their roots up. This method will allow the tomatoes to hold out for 1, 5-2 months.
