Ornamental cabbage is loved not only by gardeners, but also by pests. They are not averse to feasting on young tender leaves. Let's consider the most effective methods of dealing with "competitors" in our areas
Pest types
The most common pests on ornamental cabbage are:
1. Cruciferous flea.
2. Naked slugs, snails.
3. Cabbage White.
4. Aphids.
You cannot relax during the whole season. Constant monitoring of plants will help to avoid mass destruction.
Cruciferous flea
Description. Small bugs 2-3mm long with elytra of black, green, blue hue, sometimes with yellow stripes on a black background. The presence of a metallic luster, special jumping ability are the distinctive features of the pest.
Wintering is arranged under deciduous litter, plant debris, in the arable horizon of the beds. They damage the upper layer of the epidermis of young seedlings, forming small pits, and suck out the juice. Leaves dry.
Numerous eggs are laid on the roots of plants. After 2 days, larvae hatch, feeding on young roots. They pupate here. Sexually mature beetles emerge in the middle of summer. They give 1 generation per year.
Control measures:
1. Autumn digging of beds;
2. Destruction of cabbage residues at the end of the season.
3. In spring, control of cruciferous weeds on the site.
4. Top dressing of seedlings with nitrogen fertilizers at the initial stage. The leaves coarsen faster and become less attractive to the pest.
5. In the morning, every day after watering, sprinkle the crop through a sieve with ash or road dust, blocking access to succulent feed.
6. Install paper flags on the bed, smeared with special glue for caterpillars. It remains viscous for a long time, does not dry out in the sun.
Naked slugs, snails
Description. Long (up to 5 cm) fusiform body of a brownish or gray shade, covered with mucus. When dry, it leaves a shiny mark on the soil. Hibernating eggs are spherical in shape, similar to fish eggs. Sexually mature individuals hatch from them in May. Closer to autumn, the female hides 20-30 eggs in soil cracks, lumps, any cracks. The adult generation takes refuge during the day in shady, damp places (under boards, bricks, grass). Eats leaves at night.
Control measures:
1. Frequent loosening of the soil around the plants;
2. Unfolding damp rags, boards, slate pieces overnight. In the afternoon, gathering of adults hiding there from the heat.
3. Mulching the beds with sawdust. The naked body of a slug does not like prickly materials.
4. Spreading clean slaked lime or a mixture of it with tobacco dust along the paths.
5. The use of metaldehyde in the aisles.
Cabbage white
Description. Large butterflies with white wings at the corners with small black spots, pin-like antennae. Caterpillars are gray-green on the back, with black spots on the surface, the abdomen is yellowish, 4 cm long. Pupae overwinter on trees, walls of buildings, bushes. Gnaws through the soft tissues of the leaf, leaving the veins intact. During the season, 2 generations have time to grow.
Control measures:
1. Early planting of plants promotes the rapid departure from the vulnerable, young stage.
2. Manual collection of eggs, caterpillars from the back of the sheet.
3. Treatment with biological agents: entobacterin, dendrobacillin.
4. Killing weeds of a similar family.
5. Autumn digging of beds.
Aphid
Description. A sedentary, small insect with a whitish-grayish bloom of wax on the body. It feeds on cabbage juice, discoloring the leaves. With a large accumulation of the pest, the plants dry out. Gives 10-20 generations per season, depending on weather conditions.
Control measures:
one. Attraction of larvae of butterflies of bolls, lacewings, sirphids to the site, by planting celery, carrots, dill testes next to the cabbage. Aphids' natural enemies feed here.
2. Spraying with green soap solution, more thoroughly from the wrong side of the leaf.
3. Treatment with prepared preparations based on decoction of tops of potatoes, tomatoes, tobacco, onion husks.
4. The use of chemicals: deltamethrin, Iskra.
5. Autumn collection of plant remains, burning them in the spring.
