Harvesting and storage of sea buckthorn

Sea buckthorn is extremely unpretentious and from year to year pleases us with a bountiful harvest. But not all hostesses have an idea of how to properly store these gifts of nature. Meanwhile, there are many options for storing this wonderful berry - you can freeze this healthy berry, close it in syrup, or make wonderful jam or jam from it. And some summer residents store unpretentious sea buckthorn in the form of juice or valuable oil! How can this be done?

Harvesting sea buckthorn

Juicy sea buckthorn should be harvested as it ripens, exclusively in sunny and, of course, dry weather. At the same time, the berries are folded into shallow and necessarily dry containers, the bottoms of which can be covered with paper in advance.

Storing fresh berries

If it is not possible to quickly process the harvested sea buckthorn within the next hours, the desired crop should be placed in a darkened and fairly cool place.

Suitable for storing berries and ordinary plastic bags. Sea buckthorn tightly packed in them is sent to the refrigerator - there the berries are easily stored for about a week, since the cold significantly slows down the decay processes.

As for berries stored at room temperature, it must be systematically sorted out, timely discarding spoiled specimens.

How to freeze?

Frozen sea buckthorn berries invariably retain their valuable useful properties. To freeze them, the berries are sprinkled in a thin layer on a pallet and immediately sent to the freezer. Ideally, it is advisable to use the quick freeze function - if you ignore this recommendation, large ice crystals may form inside the berries, which greatly deform the pliable sea buckthorn during subsequent defrosting.

Sea buckthorn in syrup

Perhaps this is the simplest and most affordable way of harvesting sea buckthorn for the winter - mashed, thoroughly washed sea buckthorn is poured with pre-prepared saturated sugar syrup. The blanks are closed in sterilized jars and sent to be stored in a cool place. This storage method allows you to preserve the beneficial properties of this valuable berry until spring.

If there is no opportunity to place the workpieces in a cool place, it is quite permissible to resort to sterilization, that is, put closed jars of berries in a water bath or in water, and then subject them to appropriate heat treatment for thirty to forty minutes.

And you can make wonderful jams or aromatic preserves from sea buckthorn - as a rule, they do not need special storage conditions and are perfectly preserved until the next harvest.

Storing sea buckthorn juice

There are two ways to save sea buckthorn juice - by freezing and by sterilization.

Just like frozen berries, frozen fresh juice almost completely retains all its beneficial properties, only impressive volumes of juice in the freezer, alas, will not fit. Therefore, in the case of a particularly plentiful harvest, it is recommended to use an irreplaceable assistant - a juicer or resort to sterilization.

Sea buckthorn oil

At home, you can make healthy sea buckthorn oil. This is also done in two ways.

In the first case, juice is squeezed from the collected berries, after which they are allowed to stand for a day. After this time, oil is carefully removed from the surface of the juice. It is not difficult to find it - the oil has a lighter color and always floats on top.

The second method is to dry the sea buckthorn cake to a brownish color. The dried cake is ground in a coffee grinder and then poured with any vegetable oil (olive, soy or sunflower). And as soon as the oil becomes transparent, it is immediately filtered.

Store the cooked butter in cool and rather dark rooms. As for the shelf life, it usually does not exceed eighteen months.
