Many gardeners and summer residents love Turkish carnations for their simplicity. For her, the main thing is good soil, rare fertilizing and the absence of stagnant water. This flower can die from stagnant water. And the Turkish carnation growing almost by itself decorates any flower bed or front garden very well, because its “caps” during flowering can be of any shade: from white to dark purple
But each plant, including the Turkish carnation, has its own characteristics in growing, thanks to which you can adjust a lot, from the flowering time to the design of the garden plot with the help of that plant.
1. The Turkish beauty has long and firmly entered the life of Russian gardeners due to its unpretentiousness, but until now, many grow it for only 2 years, then mercilessly destroy the old plant in order to replace it with fresh seedlings in the spring. But this is not worth doing. Contrary to popular belief, Turkish carnations are not biennial, they can grow for several years. In addition, despite the widespread belief that carnations bloom only in the second year of life, early planting of seedlings (December-January) can achieve flowering in the current year.
2. Reproduction of carnation occurs by seeds. But to get different colors of carnations, you will have to purchase several bags of seeds. And you can buy in the store a couple of bushes of seedlings with multi-colored peduncles, and then not cut off the faded bushes, allowing the seeds to ripen and crumble on the ground. Next year you will have a multi-colored meadow, because the Turkish carnation reproduces well by self-sowing. Gradually, you will be able to form a flower bed from the flowers you like most.
3. It is possible to achieve repeated flowering of carnations in the current year. To do this, trim the faded plants so that the height of the trimmed Turkish carnation does not exceed 15 centimeters. Then water it with the addition of fertilizer for flowering plants. In a month, new shoots will appear, and at the beginning of autumn, the carnation will delight you with re-flowering.
4. Turkish carnation is one of the few plants that can be planted in summer. So if you have an empty piece of a flower bed, then sow a Turkish carnation on it, you can plant it from the beginning of June to almost mid-July. Another plus: this plant can be planted with seeds even before winter. The only difference: in June, the hole must be watered before planting, and in the fall, pour the seeds into dry soil!
5. Turkish carnation is a frost-resistant plant, so in the fall it does not require additional time spent on creating a winter shelter for it. It even survives severe winter frosts quite easily.
6. The variety of varieties of this unpretentious plant allows you to choose not only the color of the "cap", but also the height. In this regard, the carnation can be used both as a ground cover plant and as tall flowers in the center of a flower bed. And with the help of variegated and multi-colored Turkish carnations, you can create an interesting flower bed, with low light plants at the edges and darker and higher ones in the center, making a smooth transition in height and color from the edge to the middle of the flower bed.
7. If, after winter, the shoots of carnations are weak, strongly elongated and fall on the soil, then you can try to root them. To do this, carefully sprinkle all the lodged sprouts with soil and lightly water them so that the soil is just moist. After a while, the sprouts will take root and new plants will appear from them.
8. Please note that despite modest care, the Turkish carnation loves bright sunny places, light fertile soils with good drainage, which will completely eliminate the likelihood of stagnant water and plant death.
