Description

The scientific name is Mattiola two-horned, and in the common people it is called a night violet or Vechernitsa. A flower with a sweet honey scent, native to sunny Greece. The night violet is an unremarkable plant, like an ugly duckling, the flowers are small enough, but with the onset of darkness, as well as in cloudy weather, they reveal their aroma, which is what fascinates. It has a herbaceous long straight stem, leaves are whole, oblong, obtuse. The stem and leaves may be slightly pubescent, depending on the type of plant.

The night violet is an annual plant that grows in the form of a rod, and can grow to over 75 centimeters in height. Seeds of Night violets are sown for seedlings in early spring, the first shoots appear quite quickly, after 4-5 days. Since the night violet is cool-loving, therefore it is advisable to create a temperature regime of + 7- + 9 degrees in the room, for faster germination of seeds. Night violets are sown in open ground by mid-May. The seeds of the night violet are very small, therefore it is recommended to plant them in shallow holes. The flowering period of the night violet is short, up to ten days, so it is worth sowing the seeds at intervals of fifteen to twenty days. The night violet prefers stony and sandy soils, but the oxidized soil has a detrimental effect on the plant.

Care

A favorite planting site for matthiola is well-lit and warm places, but partial shade is also suitable for planting violets. The night violet does not need close attention, but watering is still better in the morning. Make sure that the plant is not flooded with too much water, otherwise the roots of the violet will begin to rot and the plant will die. This flower can even be grown on the balcony. If there is such a desire, then it is worth stocking up on seedlings in advance, because the seeds sown all together will sprout sluggish and not viable. The sown seedlings should have a distance of about 25-30 cm between themselves. Fertilize the night violet twice a month with mineral fertilizers. It is not recommended to use slurry.

Since the plant is capable of picking up diseases of other plants, such as cabbage, you should not plant this type of flower in the soil where cruciferous plants used to be planted. The violet can easily become infected with fungus or flea beetles. When infected with a fungus, the stem and root begin to turn red, or turn brown - a sure sign of flower disease. Before planting and after sowing, the seedlings can be treated with Hom solution. Do not forget to weed the beds, the flowers need to loosen the soil and remove weeds. It is worth planting the soil at a distance of 15-25 cm. But you need to sow seeds every 3-4 weeks in order to enjoy the intoxicating aroma of these wonderful flowers in the evenings. Unfortunately, after flowering, the plant dies.
