Separate root crops in the first year after sowing form seed arrows, the rest are normal juicy carrots. During the digging of the crop, there are many small white roots on the finished product. Why do these things happen? How to protect root crops from adverse manifestations? Help them grow up beautiful, healthy, juicy

Why do root crops shoot in the first year?

There are several factors influencing the formation of arrows instead of sweet roots:

• early winter crops;

• lack or excess of moisture in the soil;

• poor quality source material;

• germination under stressful conditions;

• thickened crops;

• during the growth period, low humidity against a background of heat.

Each of the reasons individually or several at once affects the quality of the crop. How to prevent the formation of "bouquets"?

Prevention methods

The flowering process in the beds cannot be stopped. You can carry out preventive measures.

In rare cases, the genes of the wild ancestors of carrots are manifested, giving in the first year flower arrows that form tough, white roots. This phenomenon does not occur on all plants. Using your own seeds from parental forms with the letter F1 increases the likelihood of arrows appearing.

The characteristics of the variety are indicated on the labels of the planting material. If there is a record "not prone to shooting", feel free to take a sowing pack. They have proven themselves well in Central Russia: Nanskaya, Incomparable, Canning, Cold-resistant, Vitamin, Queen of Autumn, Gribovskaya. With these varieties, you will always have an excellent harvest.

Carrots prefer sunny locations with loose soil. The best predecessors are: cauliflower, white cabbage, beetroot, tomato, cucumber, early potatoes, green crops, except for lettuce.

Sow in frozen soil before winter. In recent years, it is difficult to guess the time due to frequent thaws, long autumn with temperature changes from plus to minus. During this period, the seeds swell and stratify. In summer, the bulk goes into color.

In the spring, sow at the optimal time, when the soil warms up to 5-7 degrees (mid-May). Seeding too early in rainy, cold weather leads to the formation of "bouquets".

Observe the seeding rate, avoiding thickened plantings. Between the lines it is kept 20-25cm, in rows 3-5cm, depending on the variety. In the later, the distance is increased, in the early ones, it is reduced. Good illumination of a single plant helps to form the "correct" root crop.

Watering is regular during dry periods. Spilling 1-2 times a week to the depth of the arable layer. The norm for 1 square meter is 25 liters.

The addition of a "lighthouse" culture (radish, lettuce) to carrot seeds allows to start inter-row loosening earlier, closing the evaporation of moisture, preventing the topsoil from drying out.

At the first signs of sweeping arrows, remove them from the garden, preventing nutrients from being wasted on growth, shade other plants.

Why is there increased hairiness?

Small root hairs are formed along the entire length of the root during vegetation and storage. There are several reasons for this:

• lack of moisture (the root crop tries to get it by increasing the number of sucking hairs);

• soil crust on heavy clay soils contributes to oxygen deficiency.

Preventive measures:

1. Maintaining humidity during storage at 80%.

2. Timely loosening of the soil after watering, rains will disrupt the swimming of the upper layer.

3. Adding sand, peat, compost will loosen the structure.

4. Regular, sufficient application of moisture to the depth of the arable horizon.

The complex application of the above methods will avoid the formation of unwanted "bouquets" on carrots. Will reveal the maximum potential of the variety. Promotes excellent storage of root crops in winter.
