The refrigerator is a familiar and very convenient place for storing food. However, not all supplies are comfortable in the cold. Here are just a few of the foods you shouldn't keep in the refrigerator for a long time
Refrigerators were invented to help people keep food fresh for longer. Under the influence of cold, food is better protected from the appearance of pathogenic bacteria. But cold is not good for all foods. Some of them, freezing, quickly lose their taste and properties. Of course, they can be sent to the cold for a short time, but they should not be left there for several days.
1. Watermelons
Whole watermelons do not keep well in the refrigerator. If you store watermelons at room temperature, they will retain more antioxidants (lycopene and beta-carotene) than if they are kept cold. Therefore, having bought a watermelon, it is better to leave it at home temperature. But the cut berry must be sent to the refrigerator for safety, but kept there for no more than 1-2 days.
2. Tomatoes
In the cold, tomatoes lose their taste and useful properties, become soft, and are not able to ripen. Therefore, it is recommended to store tomatoes at room temperature, in a paper bag, stalk down. Do not allow sunlight to fall on the tomatoes. Only overripe tomatoes can be stored in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
3. Potatoes
If you store potatoes in the refrigerator, they will acquire a sweetish taste and roughness. Cold temperatures destroy the starch contained in potatoes, increase the sugar and acrylamide content, which increases the risk of developing cancer cells.
If you store potatoes in a warm and humid environment, they will sprout, making them dangerous for food. It is best to leave this vegetable, like other root vegetables, in cool and dark rooms (cellar, pantry). Dry the potatoes thoroughly before storing. If stored in a plastic bag, the lack of air contributes to its rapid deterioration. Store potatoes in paper bags, wooden crates, or perforated plastic containers with good air circulation.
4. Bow
If whole bulbs are stored for a long time in the refrigerator, they soften and become moldy. In the refrigerator, you can store chopped onions in a sealed container for several days. For storing whole onions, a dry, cool and ventilated room, mesh bags, is suitable. Do not leave onions in plastic bags next to potatoes, as this will quickly spoil the potatoes.
5. Honey
Honey should not be refrigerated. But at the same time, it does not need to be placed near the stove or oven. Excessively cold or hot temperatures spoil the taste and texture of honey, and it crystallizes faster. Room temperature contributes to the preservation of all the beneficial properties of honey if stored in an airtight glass container. Metal and non-food grade plastic containers are not suitable for honey storage. Glassware with honey, hermetically sealed, should be placed in a dry, dark, cool place - a closet or pantry.
6. Olive oil
Olive oil used for cooking, salads should not be refrigerated. When cooled, the oil becomes cloudy, its taste and quality deteriorate. To store the oil, use an airtight bottle with an opaque glass and leave it in a dark cabinet. Exposure to heat and light makes the oil rancid.
7. Garlic
In the refrigerator, the garlic softens and its taste deteriorates. Chopped garlic in an airtight container is stored in the refrigerator for a short time. Place whole garlic in a cool, dark, well-ventilated area to prevent it from sprouting. If moisture gets on the garlic and it becomes damp, the vegetable begins to rot quickly.
8. Coffee beans
The coffee beans are hygroscopic. They can absorb food odors if placed in the refrigerator. Moisture will impair their aroma and taste. Therefore, it is recommended to store the grains in an airtight container. A cool, dry and dark cabinet is suitable for this. Coffee beans should not come into contact with air, heat and light.
9. Bread
It is not recommended to store bread in the refrigerator because moisture and cold will break down the starch. The bread dries up and deteriorates. A dry, dark and cool cabinet or a special bread bin is suitable for storing bread. In room conditions, bread can be stored in a plastic bag or foil for a couple of days.
10. Fruits and berries with seeds
Stone products - peaches, apricots, plums, cherries, etc. - are also undesirable to store in the refrigerator. From cold and moisture, they quickly grow moldy and disappear. It is better to use paper bags for storing them. It is advisable to put them in a dry, cool and ventilated place. In order for the fruits to ripen faster, you can put them on a windowsill in the sun.
