Would you like to see your garden picturesque and colorful? Then arrange an unused space under bushes and trees. This is not only a flower bed around the trunk, there are many other ways. Get acquainted with the materials and methods of landscaping near-shaft sites
What is a trunk circle?
The place under the tree, equivalent to the projection of the crown, is called the trunk circle. In a young tree, it is small, up to the age of five it always remains open for loosening and weeding. The area around the trunk is important for the seedling, through which oxygen and moisture are supplied to the roots. The porosity and moisture capacity of the soil is maintained by shallow loosening (5-6 cm) and mulching (wood chips, peat, sawdust). This is necessary for the full development of roots and nutrition. Watering and fertilizing occurs directly through it.
No land is dug under an old tree / bush, so it becomes possible to arrange this territory. At the same time, you need to know which materials will have a beneficial effect on the root system and contribute to healing.
Methods for decorating near-trunk circles
The design of the trunk circle is done in several ways, which are selected according to the style, condition and area of the garden.
Lawn covering
If you have extensive plantings and tree trunks have a diameter exceeding 20 cm, then they remain in their natural form. More precisely, the design consists of turf or grassy cover. We see this option in city squares. If you prefer this method, then keep in mind that you will need not only sowing the lawn, but also regular mowing. The grass should not lie on the bark of the tree. The trimming is carried out carefully, without leaving bumps near the tree. You will need a covered trimmer or hand-held lawn shears.
Natural materials
The near-borehole space can be decorated with natural materials. This design looks natural and wood-friendly. For these purposes, a crumb of tree bark from conifers is used, more often it is pine. Any cones, pine nut shells, large needles look great. It is not recommended to use shavings, sawdust.
If you have a large area, for example, group planting of shrubs, trees or mixborders from conifers, then the refining process must be followed according to the rules. The selected area is freed from weeds or the sod is completely removed. Then it is covered with a polymer fabric (spandbond, geotextile). There is room for moisture and air in the immediate vicinity of the barrel. The decorating material is laid on the finished base in a small layer (5-8 cm).
You can do it differently. A stencil is being prepared, with its help the area around the saplings is marked for sod removal. A plastic lawn cutter is dug in around it. The curb / tape is deepened by 8 cm, it is enough to leave 10 on the surface. Further, the process is identical to that described above.
Both methods are ideal for conifers and rhododendrons. The former grow better, the latter bloom longer and more abundantly. The fact is that such a "backfill" protects against drying out, limits the activity of weeds, and enhances the aerobic capacity of the soil. Watering is carried out less frequently, and over time, the decomposition of natural materials provides additional nutrition to the roots. You will need to add fresh mulch with an interval of 2-3 years, with a layer of 1 cm.
It is not recommended to cover the trunks with cobblestones, to set pegs, logs for decoration, as this complicates the process of lawn mowing.
The most durable design
Inert materials are the most practical and rational design of trunks. There are a lot of them: colored gravel, melted glass, river pebbles of different sizes, marble chips, etc. All such types look impressive and durable. They are laid, as well as natural mulch on geotextiles / spandbond, using the same technique and perform the same functions. As a result, you get protection of the near-trunk circle from drying out, block weed growth and decorate the territory.
Such materials are actively used in the construction of gravel gardens, rock gardens, in landscapes of landscape and regular style. When working with inert views, you have room for imagination and improvisation with shades.
