An evergreen shrub with fragrant flowers and leaves can be grown in cold climates if protected from cold winds. It is suitable for hedging and potting
Rod Choisia
The Latin name of the genus is written as “
Choisya . This word can be read in different ways, depending on the rules of which language to read it. Therefore, in the Russian sound, you can find the pronunciation of the name as “
Choisia », With which people who know that the name of the genus of evergreens immortalized the name of a Swiss botanist who lived in the first half of the 19th century, Jacques Denys Choisy, do not agree, which is pronounced as, Jacques Denis Choisy … Therefore, the name of the genus should be pronounced as “
Choisia ».
But, as they say, it is not the name that paints the plant, but its appearance and the aroma emitted by the flowers and leaves. And the plants of the genus possess these qualities in full.
Of the few (5-7) species of shrubs, united in the genus "Choisya", in the culture most often grown Choisia trifoliate, somewhat less often, Choisia shrub.
Choisia trifoliate
For
Choisia trifoliate (Choisya ternata) is characterized by leaves consisting of three short-petiolized simple leaves with a glossy green surface and small denticles along the edge.
Root shrub can grow up to 2 meters in height, but usually it is a relatively short, neat shrub with a dense rounded crown. At the ends of the twigs, in the axils of the leaves, in May (repeated flowering occurs in the fall), inflorescences of white flowers bloom. The delicate scent of orange blossom comes from the abundant flowering and leaves of the shrub when rubbed in the palm of your hand.
(Orange blossom is the white fragrant flowers of the Pomeranian, a hybrid of Mandarin and Pomelo).
Bred varieties with yellow leaves; with pink buds turning into white flowers with a pinkish tinge.
Choisia shrub
Choisia shrub (Choisya dumosa) grows up to 1 meter in height. Its leaves consist of 3 or 5 leaves, exuding a lemon scent. Flowering lasts from April to August.
Growing
Choisia is decorative in a single planting, but also looks great in small groups, as well as in hedges. In cold climates, it is grown in pots, taking them outside or on the balcony in the summer. From the compact bushes of the hybrid variety "Aztec Pearl" they arrange borders.
The shrub site can be sunny or slightly shaded. To protect against cold winds in areas with frosty winters, care should be taken to choose a favorable location. Indeed, although the plant is frost-resistant, prolonged cold weather is dangerous for it.
The soils are preferably slightly acidic with a well-organized drainage system.
When planting a shrub in April, flowering should only be expected the next year, that is, flowering appears on the branches of the last year. Therefore, branches blooming in spring are shortened after flowering ends.
The plant tolerates drought better. Than excess moisture. Therefore, watering for adult bushes is not needed. Only young seedlings grown in pots are watered, as well as during prolonged drought.
When grown in pots, the transplant is carried out every 2-3 years, in the spring.
To maintain the appearance, remove damaged, dry and densely growing branches.
Reproduction
You can propagate by seeds, shoots or cuttings, which are cooked in August. The last method is the most popular.
Cuttings for rooting are placed in a container filled with a mixture of sand and peat, in a fifty-fifty ratio. The container is kept in an unheated room. After rooting, each cuttings are provided with a personal container in which they wait for spring planting in open ground. In warm climates, cuttings are planted immediately in open ground.
Buy Choisia
not easy, it must be ordered in advance from horticultural centers.
Enemies
The main enemies of the plant are excess moisture and heavy soil, which provoke root damage by fungal diseases.
