The large spherical inflorescences of Hydrangeas were liked by flower growers for their abundant decorative flowering, resistance to cold weather and ease of care. Hydrangea is grown outdoors, in greenhouses and indoors
Hydrangia
The Latin name of the plant Hydrangea (Hydrangea), assigned by botanists for its love of moist soil, somehow did not take root with us. People fondly call the deciduous shrub, or liana, by its original name, "Hortensia", in which the name of one of the European princesses of the times of Great Rome is immortalized.
A beautifully flowering plant has firmly occupied a niche among garden and ornamental plants and has several dozen species, among which there may even be small trees, but more often these are deciduous shrubs or lianas.
Hydrangea paniculata or garden
Hydrangea paniculata or garden (Hydrangea paniculata) is especially loved by Italians. But its ability to withstand frosts down to minus 15 degrees allows you to admire flowering shrubs in more severe climatic regions.
Even if frosts overcome the plant, destroying the aboveground parts, with the arrival of heat, new shoots appear, covered with large oval leaves with a jagged decorative edge. Gradually, paniculate or corymbose inflorescences, painted in white, pink, red, blue or light blue, open. Moreover, the color of the inflorescences depends on the acidity of the soil. The more acidic the soil, the more blue and blue colors prevail.
Curly types of hydrangea
Among the vines that can rise to a height of 6 to 20 meters, two types are most often grown in gardens:
1.
All-edge hydrangia (Hydrangea integerrima).
2.
Hydrangia petiolate (Hydrangea petiolaris or Hydrangea scandens).
The first evergreen vine grows up to 6 meters in height, and the second, if placed in a shaded place, up to 20 meters.
Easter symbol
Five hundred cold-sensitive varieties of Hydrangea are used for container and flower pot cultivation in greenhouses, conservatories or living quarters.
Typically, these varieties of Hydrangea bloom from March to May, capturing the great Christian holiday, Easter. Therefore, many people associate Hortense with Easter, with the Easter festivities.
Growing
Potted hydrangeas can grow in greenhouse conditions for a couple of years, and then they should be transplanted into a garden, in a free space, so that the plant does not die from crowding.
The soil for the plant requires loose, fertile, sufficiently moist, with any acidity. Acidic soil will color the inflorescences blue and blue, and white, pink and red shades will prevail on alkaline soil.
In the room for Hydrangea, they choose a place that is as illuminated as possible, and in the open field, partial shade is preferable. Although the plant gives more abundant flowering in a sunny place, if the grower provides the required moisture in the soil and air for Hydrangea.
The plant is hygrophilous, and therefore requires abundant watering and spraying. Once a month, watering is combined with mineral fertilizing, adding 20 grams of complex mineral fertilizer to a bucket of water.
To maintain the appearance, wilted inflorescences, damaged leaves are removed, last year's branches are cut in spring or before winter, leaving 1-3 pairs of buds.
Reproduction
All methods are suitable for reproduction of Hydrangeas:
- breeders use seeds;
- ordinary growers propagate by cuttings; offspring; layering; dividing the overgrown bush.
Enemies
Since Hortense loves moisture, there is always a danger of fungal diseases, which also love moist soil.
Insects like nematodes, ticks, thrips and prolific aphids love to feast on all parts of the plant.
