Shepherdia silver (lat. Shepherdia argentea) Is a fruit crop from the Lokhovye family, which is closely related to sea buckthorn.

Description

Shepherdia silvery is a low shrub, the height of which varies from two to six meters, which is largely due to the conditions of its growth. Each shrub is endowed with narrowly elliptical, oblong-lanceolate or oval leaves rounded at the tips, the length of which ranges from two to six centimeters. On both sides, all the leaves are covered with a soft silvery fluff - it is thanks to this cannon that the plant got its magnificent name. The undersides of the leaves are pubescent to a much greater extent than the upper ones.

The flowers of shepherdia silvery are devoid of petals and are painted in pleasant fawn shades. This dioecious plant blooms from the end of April to the very middle of May (more exact dates are in direct proportion to the climate). This usually happens as soon as the air warms up to six or eight degrees. And the duration of the flowering period usually does not exceed a week.

The fruits of this culture are bright red drupes, the diameter of which almost never exceeds five millimeters. Although edible, they are quite bitter. However, after the first frost, they become much tastier, since the volume of bitterness in them is significantly reduced. Everyone who has tried these berries at least once assures that they are much tastier than sea buckthorn berries. Ripening closer to the end of summer or the beginning of autumn, these colorful berries hang on the bushes for a long time and do not fall off.

Where grows

This crop originates from North America, and it is currently cultivated mainly in southern Canada (most often in the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta) and in the northwestern part of the United States, including the state of New Mexico and Northern California.

Application

It is quite permissible not only to eat berries fresh, but also to dry them, as well as to cook jam and compotes from them, make excellent jelly and seasonings, and even insist them on alcohol.

By the way, the calorie content of these berries is so low that they can be safely considered a dietary product.

These fruits are quite valuable medicinal raw materials. They have a rejuvenating effect and excellently strengthen the immune system, and the high content of carotene allows them to have an extremely beneficial effect on the condition of the skin and eyesight. There are a lot of marvelous berries and tannins, giving them a pronounced anti-inflammatory, astringent, bactericidal and hemostatic effect. In addition, these fruits are endowed with diuretic and choleretic effects, as well as powerful anti-sclerotic properties.

And since this culture is also very decorative, it is willingly used in gardening and parks (mainly to create colorful hedges). These amazing shrubs perfectly tolerate cutting and gas pollution, moreover, they are practically not susceptible to attacks from various ailments and pests.

In some cases, shepherdia silvery can provoke allergies.

Growing and caring

Shepherdia silvery is very frost and drought resistant, and also very photophilous. But it is completely undemanding to soils, since there are nodules containing nitrogen-fixing bacteria on its roots. Such an interesting feature gives it the ability to grow easily even on very poor soils.

Fruiting of this culture usually starts from the fifth or sixth year of life, and specimens grafted or grown from cuttings give fruit a year or even two years earlier. The total fruiting period of shepherdia silvery is from forty to fifty years, while up to fifteen kilograms of berries can be easily collected from each bush.
