The problem of the spread of weeds in the beds and in the garden worries every summer resident. If you do not restrict their growth, they will destroy the entire crop, and the territory will take on an unsightly abandoned appearance. Let's talk about proven methods and tools to help get rid of this phenomenon

Why do we need to fight against weeds?

The prosperity of weeds in the summer cottage negatively affects the state of useful crops. They are actively developing, rapidly increasing the green mass and, as a rule, have a progressive root system. They also deplete soil fertility and inhibit cultivated plants.

All weeds multiply rapidly: by roots, shoots, seeds, and even with the help of animals. The most common are woodlice, wild oats, shepherd's purse, burdock. There are species with a powerful underground part that are particularly difficult to remove. These are horse sorrel, field bindweed, dandelion, wild carrot and others.

Weeds and soil type

The acid composition of the soil is determined by the presence of varieties of wild plants. Based on this, it is possible to introduce the missing substances into the soil and thereby create unacceptable conditions that inhibit the growth of weeds.

• Acidic soils are chosen by Veronica Dubravnaya, bird knotweed, oxalis, tricolor violet, horsetail, creeping buttercup, horse sorrel, plantain.

• Alkaline soil - resin, field bindweed.

• Neutral - creeping / meadow clover, coltsfoot, odorless chamomile, common cuff, sweet clover.

Weed control measures at their summer cottage

Weed competition must be eliminated. Measures to cleanse the territory are carried out in different ways, but more often complex effects are used.

Preventive measures

To prevent the appearance of weeds, it is necessary to observe crop rotation. Check seeds for weeds before planting. Conduct top dressing to strengthen cultural plantings. Treat the soil before planting plants.

Extermination activities

The use of methods aimed at removing already growing weeds include, first of all, mechanical action: weeding, loosening. The effect depends on the regularity, when new shoots are constantly removed. Guaranteed eradication occurs when using a pitchfork, in which case it is possible to completely remove the root, rather than chop it into pieces.

Agrotechnical measures

Shading the surface of the beds with a special material inhibits and stops the growth of weeds. For this, anything is used: linoleum, black polyethylene, cardboard, roofing felt, etc. It is enough to close the surface for 3-4 weeks. Some crops (strawberries) are cultivated in beds that are covered constantly, since plantings are initially made in special holes.

Sometimes mulching with straw, sawdust, dry grass helps. The layer should be even and thick (7 cm). The effect appears when covering in early spring on the soil cleared of harmful plants. Drip irrigation, in turn, also reduces the favorable environment for the development of weeds, since water flows directed only to cultivated specimens.

Chemical method

Herbicide-based products are relevant on neglected areas and in the presence of plants such as hogweed that are dangerous to humans. Chemicals are chosen based on their focus, since they are selective and continuous.

Summer residents usually use "selective" agrochemicals to get rid of a specific weed that parasitizes on the backyard. They do no damage to crops and do not harm them at all. The following types of drugs are not dangerous for the environment:

• "Tornado" - used against cattail, reed, wheatgrass, pig, bindweed;

• "Ground Bio", "Roundup" - universal action;

• "Lintur" - clover, dandelion, highlander, buttercup, plantain;

• "Propolol" - sorrel, yarrow, dandelion, chamomile and other broadleaf weeds.

Complex method

The combination of several methods of weed control gives the most desirable results. For example, applying mechanical action after chemical action and vice versa will work better. In any case, with a complex action, weed vegetation is suppressed more actively. As a result, the cultivated species become competitive, and when they develop well, they suppress weeds.
