They say that nature does not have bad weather. But one can argue with this statement if it presents a surprise in the form of late spring frosts, when buds have already blossomed on the trees in our gardens, or even blooming or even ovaries are in full swing. In order not to blame the weather, you need to take care in advance to protect your garden from such surprises

Why are negative temperatures in spring so terrible?

Why are spring frosts dangerous and are they really worse than winter ones? The fact is that in the cold season the tree is dormant. And when the process of sap flow has begun, and flowers and ovaries have appeared on the branches, even weak frosts can lead to their fall and, as a result, loss of yield.

With what arsenal can a person come out against the vagaries of nature? To combat late spring frosts, you can use various methods:

• smoke in the garden;

• small-drop sprinkling;

• sheltering trees.

Smoke heaps against spring frosts

One of the easiest and most effective methods of protecting the garden from spring frost during flowering is the use of smoke piles for fumigation. To create such a heap, use:

• straw;

• tops of garden crops;

• fallen leaves;

• weeds;

• manure.

A pile is arranged with a height of about 50-75 cm, in width it is made no more than 1.5 meters. In longitudinal section, the pile looks like several pyramids, put on top of each other like nesting dolls:

1. The smallest lower pyramid in the matryoshka is a dry combustible material, accounting for about 1/3 of the total volume of the heap.

2. From above it is covered with a layer of raw combustible material - this is the middle pyramid.

3. The last, top layer of the pyramid - the largest matryoshka - is a layer of earth about 3 cm thick.

The pile is pierced with stakes, with the help of which they will regulate the smoke. They are set on fire from the windward side so that the smoke barrier spreads through the garden more efficiently. This procedure is performed within 2-3 hours. The signal for its start is a sharp drop in air temperature to + 1 … + 2 ° С.

An important point: the pile should be smoking, not burning. If a flame breaks through in some places, earth is thrown there. When the pile has been smoking for an insufficient time, it needs to be helped by loosening the pitchfork, moving the stakes.

How will ice crystals help?

It may seem strange and even dangerous to spray trees with water before frost. Let's remember that when it freezes, the energy of water is released as heat. Therefore, it is important that small droplets cover the flowering trees completely: twigs, leaves, flowers. Then the heat released during the crystallization process will compensate for the changes in ambient temperature.

To ensure quality sprinkling, stock up on a fine hose sprayer. Do not use this method before sunrise and in strong winds. It is also not recommended to use sprinkler irrigation while the tree is not yet covered with leaves.

Warm clothes for trees

And, of course, with late spring frosts, it is very effective to use various shelters. It can be a plastic wrap, which is wrapped around a flowering tree and, for reliability, is tied with twine on a trunk. It is also acceptable to use agrofibre of the appropriate color and density. It has its advantages, since it not only protects from low temperatures, but also, due to its porous structure, allows the tree to breathe even under dense shelter.

So there is no need to despair if spring presents an unexpected surprise in the form of a hard frost. Prepare for this in advance, and this event will not entail unpleasant consequences.
