Ferns are very beautiful and will help decorate any area. But how difficult it is at times to choose the right type! In this series of articles, I want to talk about some of the most interesting types of ferns and the peculiarities of growing these plants.
Before you buy a beautiful fern, study carefully the information about it, as a charming and small-looking sprout can present you with many surprises and disappointments in the future. To prevent this from happening, do not purchase ferns until you study their features and decide on a planting site (and whether you need ferns on the site at all).
The first is an ordinary bracken
So, the common bracken is considered the most unpretentious. It is widespread in the wild: it can be found in Europe, Siberia, and Australia. Biologists classify the bracken as a member of the Hypolepis family. The common bracken reproduces very quickly, covering the entire free territory with thickets. Its height ranges from 40 to 70 centimeters, occasionally taller ferns can be found. It got its name due to the fact that its leaves resemble the spread wings of an eagle.
Why is bracken good?
It looks beautiful anywhere on your site, especially if you want to create the effect of a "natural" garden. This fern is unpretentious and grows anywhere and on any soil.
Features of eagle care
In principle, as mentioned earlier, the common bracken is unpretentious and does not require special care for growth and reproduction. In addition, it grows well on any, even poor, soils and multiplies quickly, occupying the entire free area. Therefore, when planting a bracken, in order to avoid its excessive growth, it is necessary to immediately limit its territory by laying roofing material, slate, curb, everything that can limit the growth of rhizomes in the flowerbed or in other places where the fern is planted.
For planting a fern, it is better to choose a slightly shaded place, but so that the sun at least sometimes illuminates it. Any soil is suitable: loose, sandy, black earth and poor, light and not very - the bracken will take root everywhere. In addition, another undoubted plus of this type of fern is that it easily tolerates drought and nothing terrible will happen to it if it is left for a long time without watering. But it is still better for planting to take loose light soil and choose a damp place, then the fern will "thank" you with its rapid growth and beautiful bright fresh leaves.
Another important factor: the fern does not need additional feeding and watering with fertilizers. No, the plant will not be against feeding at all, but if for some reason this is not done, then the plant will not die and its appearance will not deteriorate. In winter, the bracken does not need shelter or additional insulation, since it is frost-resistant.
Where can I get material for planting?
You can buy a small bush ready for planting in a special “dacha” store, or you can simply dig up a root in the forest. If you decide to dig a root in the forest, then be careful and carefully examine the selected plant. Material for growing any kind of fern should be taken only from a healthy bush!
At first, about a year or two after planting, the fern grows very poorly, it can generally be in the same pore and visually hardly change, but then it grows very quickly. By the way, in autumn the fern leaves change their color from juicy green to bronze or brown.
This is interesting: bracken leaves have good anti-purulent properties. Previously, in many countries, fruits, vegetables and even fish were shifted with the leaves of this type of fern in order to keep them fresh for as long as possible.
Attention! This fern is dangerous for pets due to the presence of some toxic substances, but it is absolutely safe for humans!
