Fern is one of the oldest representatives of the flora, growing on our planet to this day. There are a huge number of varieties of this plant known to mankind, more than a thousand representatives grow on the territory of Russia alone. The legend of the fern flower is perhaps the most famous. It promises the one who sees the fern bloom, untold riches hidden in the ground. Alas, this is only a legend - for no one has ever seen flowers or treasures.
Striking plants, surprising in their beauty, were brought from shady tropical and subtropical forests. Currently, ferns are successfully grown at home. In this article, I propose to dwell on some types of these plants, which are relatively unpretentious to the conditions of keeping in the house and may well grow on your windowsills or in aquariums.
Indoor fern
Why are indoor ferns so attractive? Its rather attractive leaf shape. If, for example, we look more closely at the leaves of nephrolepis, we can see that it has feathery leaves, the length of which can be up to 70 cm.
It is worth remembering that for ferns growing at home, you need to organize frequent spraying of the leaves, especially during the heating season. For watering, you can use tap water, after letting it stand. Like any other indoor plants, ferns do not like direct sunlight - it is fraught with burns, as well as cold. Make sure that the soil in the pot does not dry out, however, you should not fill it. To provide "breathing" in the roots - you can raise the lower branches with the help of flower supports.
Red fern
Red fern grows slowly, while not picky about caring for oneself. A distinctive feature of this species are young leaves, which have a reddish tint. The height of the red fern is no more than 30 cm with a width of about 15 cm. The red fern loves a spacious aquarium and a water temperature of about 20-30 degrees, while it can grow on the ground - the main thing is that it is humid and there are no bright, sun rays. Despite the fact that it is not whimsical to care for, it grows slowly. Some varieties of this fern are frost-hardy.
Thailand fern
This fern species is popular with aquarists. It has long and thin rhizomes and leaves of a bright green color, lanceolate, which can grow up to 30 cm long. In order for it to grow and feel comfortable, several conditions must be observed: moderate heat in cool weather and cooling in heat. Plant it in a shady part of the aquarium, but do not bury the rhizome in the ground. It is very important to immediately choose the right place for it, and, after planting, do not move it anymore - the plant does not like changes. If you do everything right, it will delight you with its leaves of a bright, saturated color.
Indian fern
The Indian fern is one of the most common aquarium plants. It mainly grows in tropical areas around the globe. The beautiful, finely dissected leaves of the Indian fern have a pale green tint. This species grows up to 50 cm in height. The Indian fern is best suited for small aquariums. A very important note: when the water temperature drops, it slows down its growth, and such a fern also does not like bright sun and direct sunlight. Artificial light is the most optimal lighting for him.
Male fern or dwarf bush
The male fern is a herbaceous perennial plant that, under favorable conditions, can grow up to a meter in height. It has a powerful rhizome and large leaves, doubly pinnate, collected in a bunch. This fern grows well in damp and shady places, loves swampy areas, forests and places of fire. By the way, a wonderful extract is obtained from fresh rhizomes of this species, which can be used for diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, for skin diseases, coughs, as an anthelmintic and other health problems. Fern is poisonous, it has many contraindications!
What is the secret of caring for ferns
In indoor conditions, more than two thousand species of ferns can grow, but in fact, only a few dozen are grown. The classic fern consists of a rosette of curved, feathery leaves called fronds. Some species have solid leaf plates - these are bone, leaflet, and platitcerum. All indoor ferns love abundant watering. Fern potted soil should never dry out. Moisture-loving tropical ferns are very fond of organic fertilizers, which must be fed to plants throughout the entire growth period at least once a week, and in winter - once a month.
