Getting to know the plant
Orontium aquatic is a coastal or aquatic plant belonging to the Aroid family with a height of thirty centimeters to half a meter. Vertical rooting rhizomes of this herbaceous perennial are deeply immersed in the ground as they grow. The roots of the aquatic orontium are rather long and peculiar.
The leaves of this aquatic inhabitant, when planted at a decent depth, are floating, and in plants growing in shallow water, they are slightly raised. In width they reach from five to twelve centimeters, and in length - up to thirty. All leaves are pointed, whole-edged, have an oblong-elliptical shape and are equipped with clear parallel veins. Above, they are painted in a dense green color, even a little bluish, and below these leaves are silvery, sometimes with a pleasant purple tint. They are also characterized by a water-repellent wax surface. The width of the flattened leaf petioles is about 1.2 cm, and their length can reach half a meter.
Peduncles of aquatic orontium are more authentic than leaves, thickened and flattened at inflorescences. They can be both arcuate and straight. The upper parts of the peduncles rise above the water surface, and the lower ones are submerged in water. During the flowering period, they are painted in a rich white color.
Small bisexual flowers of aquatic orontium are painted in a pleasant golden yellow color and form in a sufficiently large number either club-like, club-like, or narrowly cylindrical cobs that rise above the water. The length of such ears is in the range from twelve to eighteen centimeters, and the width is in the range of 0.6 - 0.8 cm. The flowering of aquatic orontium can be admired in April and May. But the smell of flowers is very unpleasant.
The fruits of this bizarre plant are single-seeded green berries. The cobs of aquatic orontium tend to the water surface as these fruits ripen. As soon as the berries are fully ripe, they immediately separate from the cobs and float on the water surface for about a week. Subsequently, the water fills the pericarp, with the result that the fruits sink to the bottom of the reservoirs. And about a week later, the seeds begin to germinate in the muddy soil.
Use of orontium aquatic
In addition to the fact that aquatic orontium is actively used to decorate reservoirs, it can also be eaten. Its boiled rhizomes and roasted seeds are edible. However, beforehand, both those and others should be soaked for several hours. The seeds are somewhat similar in taste to peas. And flour from dried rhizomes in some regions is used as an additive for all kinds of bakery products.
How to grow
It is most preferable to grow orontium aquatic in containers, immersing it in water, depending on the size of the plant, to a depth of thirty centimeters. It is best to opt for fertile clay soils, and also choose sunny and warm areas for growing this handsome man. It is noteworthy that this aquatic inhabitant cannot boast of a high growth rate. It should also be mentioned that in central Russia, aquatic orontium grown in soil may also not bloom due to lack of heat. Reproduction of this aquatic inhabitant occurs both by dividing the rhizomes and by seeds.
In the southern regions, orontium aquatic can winter quite calmly in the ground. And in other regions, it is sent for the winter to a cool winter garden or to a cellar. As a rule, it is not affected by diseases and various pests. Perhaps the only enemy of the aquatic orontium is only overgrowing algae.
