In June and July, many summer residents begin to think about what to do with the strawberry antennae - cut them off or leave them for later reproduction. Summer residents who grow mustacheless varieties of this juicy and fragrant berry, this issue, of course, is not relevant, but everyone else will not hurt to get acquainted with both possible options in more detail and choose the most optimal one for themselves. So, what is the best way to proceed - to cut off the strawberry antennae or still leave them for further reproduction?
In what cases is it recommended to trim the antennae?
Summer residents planning to harvest a good harvest from appetizing large berries are advised to remove strawberry tendrils twice a season. First, this procedure is carried out in the spring, as soon as the growing season starts - with this approach, the plants will stop spending all their energy on the growth of the antennae, and all the nutrients will certainly go to the fruits. If you do not cut the antennae in the spring, the harvest can turn out to be quite meager, and the berries can be tasteless and small.
Also, strawberry tendrils tend to grow back closer to the end of fruiting - if this happens, they are immediately cut off near the very bases. At the same time, it is important to try to resist the temptation to tear off the antennae with your hands - strawberry shoots can boast of a fairly high strength, therefore, trying to tear off the mustache with your hands, you can easily pull out the entire berry bush together with the root. It is best to use sharp scissors or a garden pruner to trim the antennae.
Nevertheless, many summer residents prefer to keep antennae on flowering strawberry bushes, since they simply replace them every three to four years. Regular renewal gives them the opportunity to get rich harvests every season, since after several years the fruiting of berry bushes begins to gradually deteriorate. However, this approach will be advisable only if there are several strawberry beds on the site, at least two or three (in this case, old strawberries will grow on one, and young strawberries on the other).
Propagation of strawberries with antennae
If some summer residents strive to cut off strawberry antennae, others actively use them for subsequent reproduction. And, it is worth noting, this is not a complicated matter at all. And in order to get only the best planting material, it does not hurt to adopt a few simple rules.
After waiting for the end of fruiting, you should mark the most lush bushes, delighting with especially tasty and largest berries. Next, you should select antennae of impressive length, equipped with several rosettes, and root in the beds (either on low mounds or at soil level) those rosettes that are located near the mother bushes, since it is they who will begin to bear fruit first. And the remaining out of work parts of the shoots are recommended to be cut off. As for all other antennae that will not be used for reproduction, then they should also be cut off (by the way, they will be an excellent raw material for adding to the compost pit).
You can plant a strawberry with antennae and in another way - by cutting off the antennae immediately after fruiting, the strongest rosettes are rooted in peat pots or cups filled with fertile soil, without deepening the parts of the rosettes located in the center. Then containers with plants are placed on a windowsill or in a greenhouse and systematically watered young bushes, making sure that the watering is moderate.
As soon as the antennae take root, they are transplanted into the beds - the most suitable time for this will be the period from the end of August until the onset of mid-September. And in order for the antennae to take root sooner and much easier, it is best to perform these manipulations in the evening or in cloudy weather. Then everything will definitely work out!
