Latin gives names to many things and phenomena. So the word "herba", which means "grass" in translation, underlies an interesting activity for children and adults - collecting and drying herbs to design a "herbarium".
Of course, our herbarium will not meet all the requirements for scientific herbariums stored in special institutions with the same name. But he will bring benefits to children no less.
How a herbarium is made
For a scientific herbarium, the plant is dug out of the ground along with the roots. The presence of flowers and fruits on the plant is encouraged, which is not feasible for every blade of grass.
After shaking off the soil from the roots, the plant is carefully placed in a pile of filter paper, straightening the leaves. Then a stack of paper is pulled into a special herbarium net and the plant is dried. Now you can start decorating the herbarium. To do this, the dried plants are laid on cardboard and fixed on it with glue or a needle and thread.
But this still cannot be called a herbarium. Each plant must be accompanied by a label. It should be filled out accurately, legibly and give brief but meaningful information about this representative of wildlife.
Most likely you do not have a stack of filter paper and a special herbarium mesh. No problem! For drying plants, an old thick book of a large format is quite suitable, for example, a volume of a Soviet encyclopedia or a collection of sayings of the leaders of Marxist-Leninist philosophy, gathering dust in the attic of a house in the village. Glue, scissors, a needle and thread can be found in every home.
The labels made by the child will allow him to remember the place of collecting herbs, the happy atmosphere of the sunny summer of childhood after many years. And pleasant memories will save you from rash actions, from bitter moments of sadness, support you in failures and losses.
Scientific herbarium
Scientific herbariums provide a wealth of information for scientists. The oldest surviving herbarium is located in Rome. Its age is five hundred years. It is assembled and decorated by the hands of people who lived at the beginning of the 16th century.
Who knows, maybe a herbarium made with your own hands, in a hundred or two hundred years, your great-great … grandchildren will find in the dust of the attic the still-preserved village family nest and will look at and marvel at the richness of nature that surrounds you today.
What to collect for the herbarium
Herbarium themes can be very different. Perhaps at school, the children received an assignment for the summer - to prepare a herbarium on a specific topic. Alternatively, you can use any plant community as your theme. For example:
* Shape and color of tree leaves.
* Useful garden weeds.
* Medicinal herbs in our backyard.
* The most bitter herbs.
* Edible herbs of the wild.
* Honey herbs in our garden.
* Flowers of our front garden.
* Plants of our pond (lakes, rivers).
* Conifers and shrubs.
* Plants with red (pink, purple, yellow, white …) flowers.
Useful moments of collecting herbarium
* Joint collection of herbs gives unforgettable moments of communication with children, surrounded by natural nature.
* It brings a person closer to nature, gives an understanding of his involvement in all life on Earth to children and adults who have forgotten about this simple truth.
* Expands the knowledge of a child (and an adult) about a wonderful, amazing and fantastically interesting world, which is "here and now", and not "yesterday" and "tomorrow".
* Awakens love and desire to protect the living world created by the Almighty.
* Prepares material for the continuation of communication between children and adults on a winter evening, when snowflakes rustle against the window glass, and the house is full of warmth, comfort and summer smells emanating from dried herbs.
