About nolin
This plant grows in the northern provinces of Mexico and in the territories of the southern states of the United States. The plant owes its name to a French gardener. These plants live in arid, open areas located on rocky plains. Nolins have the ability to do without water for a long time, while they will only have enough moisture that is stored in their own stem. Sometimes this plant is also called the "elephant leg". Moisture is so carefully consumed thanks to the leaves, because they are practically not susceptible to water evaporation. The leaves are similar to sedge leaves and are very easy to cut. The main decoration of nolina is precisely the leaves, which are collected in a kind of bunch. The plant owes this circumstance to another name - "palm tree - horse's tail". In Mexico, locals even weave baskets and famous sombrero hats from such leaves.
At home, the plant rarely blooms, while only fairly adult plants can bloom.
Nolina's care
It is worth placing a pot with this plant near the south window, because the Nolins are accustomed to the heat and bright sunlight. At the same time, the plant can also grow quite well at the east and west windows. Additional lighting will be required in winter. In summer, the plant should be placed in the fresh air, but avoiding direct contact with drafts and precipitation.
As for watering, the nolins are much more afraid of an excess of moisture than a lack of it. For almost one year, this plant can do without moisture, being content only with its own resources. It is for this reason that watering is necessary only in summer and spring. The soil should dry very well between waterings. In autumn and winter, it is quite possible to do without watering.
Dry air is perfectly acceptable for this plant. In general, all succulent species do not need to provide any special moisture regime. However, this will require you to wipe the leaves with a damp sponge from time to time in order to remove dust.
During spring and summer, the plant should be fed every two weeks, while not forgetting about the alternation of mineral and organic fertilizers.
The transplant is carried out in the spring for young plants. As for the adult nolins, they are transplanted based on the measure of necessity: as soon as the roots are entwined with an earthen ball and already begin to protrude outside the pot. Sod, peat and leafy soil can be used as soil, adding a little more sand. In addition, the soil can be supplemented with lumps of clay or crumbs of broken brick.
Choose a pot similar to bonsai pots: wide and shallow. Reproduction occurs at the expense of seeds, however, the option by means of lateral offspring is also acceptable. Plants grow rather slowly.
Before planting seeds, they must be soaked in a solution of potassium permanganate for about two days. This will cause the seeds to sink to the bottom. This time, a mixture of any earth and sand is suitable as soil.
As for pests, thrips, spider mites and scale insects pose the greatest danger to nolina. Pests fill both sides of the leaves, which subsequently leads to deformation, yellowing and dying of the leaves.
If the plant has dry and brown tips on the leaves, then you should not worry too much, but you can spray the plant if the temperature exceeds twenty degrees Celsius.
From lack of light, the leaves darken, become lethargic and sink down. Therefore, the plant must be placed as close to the light as possible or supplemented with additional lighting. If the leaves from the bottom of the plant began to dry out and fall off, then this is also not a cause for concern: this process is natural. Such leaves just need to be cut off.
