Sorrel (lat. Rumex) - an annual or perennial plant of the Buckwheat family. Currently, about 120 species are known. Under natural conditions, sorrel grows in Eurasia, Africa, South and North America. Sorrel is widely used in cooking and traditional medicine.

Characteristics of culture

Sorrel is a herb that forms a rosette of leaves in the first year of life, and a flower stem and seeds in the second year. The root system is pivotal. Rosette leaves are entire, soft, ovate-oblong, spear-pointed at the base, up to 20 cm long, located on long petioles. Stem leaves are sessile, small.

The stem is erect, ribbed, reaches a height of 50-100 cm, ends in a narrow leafless paniculate inflorescence. The flowers are small, green or reddish yellow. The fruit is a triangular nutlet with shine. Seeds are large, green-brown in color, retain germination for 2-3 years. Flowering takes place in April-May.

Growing conditions

Sorrel is a cold-resistant culture, it easily tolerates frosts. Seeds germinate at a temperature of 3C, seedlings appear in 1-2 weeks after sowing. Sorrel is photophilous, but it develops well in semi-shaded areas. Negatively in prolonged drought, under such growing conditions, it develops a small leaf rosette and blooms ahead of time, which negatively affects the quality of the grass.

I cultivate sorrel in the same place for no more than 3-5 years, in subsequent years the yield decreases sharply. The plant prefers fertile, loose, drained, loamy or sandy loamy, non-clogged, moderately moist soils without stagnant water, with a neutral or slightly acidic pH reaction. Sorrel has a negative attitude towards preliminary liming. The best predecessors are radishes, lettuce, onions and other vegetable crops.

Soil preparation and sowing

The plot for growing sorrel is prepared in the fall, the soil is dug up on a full shovel, rotted manure or compost, superphosphate and potassium chloride are added. In the spring, the ridges are loosened with a rake, fed with nitrogen fertilizers, and the emerging weeds are removed.

Sowing is carried out in three terms: early spring, summer (June-July) and autumn under cover (October-November). Sorrel is sown in an ordinary way across the direction of the ridges. The distance between the rows should be at least 25 cm. The seeding depth is 1-2 cm. Immediately after sowing, the soil is rolled by hand and compacted with the back of the rake.

Care

Regular loosening, weeding, watering, feeding and pest and disease control are the main tasks of sorrel care. Watering is carried out moderately, the culture has a negative attitude to waterlogging. For the winter, plants are mulched with peat or sawdust, especially in regions with cold and snowless winters.

Often, sorrel is attacked by beetles and larvae of the sorrel beetle, larvae of the sorrel sawfly and aphids. Often, plants are affected by powdery mildew. To combat pests and diseases, it is recommended to use infusions of wormwood, garlic and other herbs, spraying with chemicals is permissible only after the last harvest.

Mineral and organic fertilizers are applied either in early spring or late autumn. In dry weather, it is advisable to feed the plants with liquid fertilizers, in rainy weather - granular.

Harvesting

Sorrel is harvested with the appearance of 4-5 healthy and large leaves on the plants, characteristic of the cultivated variety. Before harvesting, the ridges with plantings are weeded, and after cutting the aisles they are carefully loosened. Cutting is carried out with a knife at a height of 3-4 cm from the surface of the earth. As a rule, harvesting begins in the second decade of May and continues until the end of July. During this time, it is possible to collect 3-4 parties.
