Do you like chocolate? I think yes. For true fans of this wonderful delicacy, even its shade warms the soul. But what if you paint your site or at least a flower bed with chocolate? Here are some tips on how to set up a chocolate garden
Defining shades
If you adore chocolate, its shades and cannot come up with a new, unusual idea for your garden, then feel free to decide to organize a "chocolate" garden. Basically, your task will be to select plants with a chocolate flavor, as well as leaves, branches or flowers of a chocolate hue.
It includes: rich browns, burgundy, bronze, maroon, deep purple and even almost black colors. These dark and dramatic tones look best when combined with calm, neutral colors, or contrast with bright ones.
If you think that finding "chocolate" plants is problematic, then you are wrong. Many breeders are constantly working on their breeding. And every year new trees, shrubs, flowers of “delicious” chocolate shades appear.
In order to equip the chocolate garden, choose the best site, because most likely in this place you will spend a lot of time. What and how to do, your imagination will tell you. There are no restrictions in this process. But remember that there should not be too many brown plants, otherwise their original, chocolate color will simply lose its attractiveness and will cut the eyes.
Solution for the tropics
Now let's talk in more detail about plant selection. Of course, if you live in a tropical climate, then you can plant cocoa trees in the garden, on which the pods of cocoa beans actually grow - from which they get the chocolate, beloved by many.
Suitable for the same warm climate: midnight ginger and elegant taro, which attract attention with their noble brown foliage. A unique sweet aroma will help bring a special chocolate orchid to the garden. By the way, it is good to plant them not only outdoors, but, if the climate does not allow, then in pots indoors.
Here you can also include a guest from Japan - Akebia quinata or, as it is often called - Chocolate liana, as well as Portlandia grandiflora with white phonographs like a lily.
What do we have?
Of course, it is not difficult to create a chocolate garden in tropical conditions - there are a lot of exotic cultures with both a “tasty” flavor and aroma. But in our, Russian climate, "chocolate" gardens can also be arranged by choosing suitable, not particularly pampered plants.
For example, for sure, many flower lovers are well aware of the variety of gladioli, which is called “Chocolate”. It very much resembles delicious sweets strung on a stick, which have managed to melt in the sun. These are beautiful flowers that are convenient in landscaping and bloom for a long time. That is why they are well-deservedly popular.
The queens of the flower world - roses - are probably in every garden. And roses of brown tones look not only beautiful, but very unusual and even soothing. Rose of the "Coffee" (Cafe) variety was bred in the middle of the last century by the famous botanist Cordes. The color of this flower is unique. It combines yellow and brown colors in an original way, forming an unobtrusive and pleasant shade of "coffee with milk". Such a rose, depending on weather conditions, changes its color. In addition, it is very fragrant.
Among the many brown roses, I would also like to highlight the varieties "Edith Holden" (Edith Holden) with smoky pink petals, "Hokus Pokus" with a brown color and barely noticeable yellowish stripes and soft coffee "Leonidas".
In addition to flowers in the flowerbed, flowering shrubs will give your garden a "chocolate" mood. For example, a fairly common variety of brown rose hips (Rosa cinnamomeal). This is a branched shrub that often reaches 2 meters in height. Its flowers are white or pink. But for a chocolate garden, this plant is indispensable due to its brownish-red branches. Its oval fruits are also pleasant brown in color.
A variety of shades of brown will appear in the garden thanks to an evergreen called rejuvenated. It can survive in the most adverse conditions and requires little or no maintenance. Rejuvenated is often also called a stone rose. Its fleshy leaves can be any shade of brown, depending on the variety. Rejuvenated is very often used in landscaping and gardening.
Delicate chocolate flowers at the bearded irises Sultan's Palace and Sprecles. You can also add dwarf irises to them, striking a variety of palettes. Chess hazel grouse has reddish-brown petals, which blooms in late spring. It is recommended to plant it next to white flowers, which will create an unusual checkerboard decor.
Shocking lilies have yellowish brown flowers. This is a very beautiful, not so long ago bred hybrid, which is still poorly known to domestic flower growers. There are even chocolate shades of tulips, daisies and daffodils …
I just want to eat
A wonderful, delicate, sweet-chocolate aroma, especially in the morning hours, exudes a modest, at first glance, yellow chamomile - berlandiera lyre. She was even nicknamed chocolate daisy or chamomile. Although outwardly it is very modest, the aroma is indescribable.
But there are plants that not only look, but also smell like chocolate. Besides, they are not so capricious. For example, blood red cosmos (Cosmos atrosanguineus) has a chic, rich color and light chocolate aroma.
No less fragrant is Mahonia. This evergreen shrub is quite common in the middle zone of the Russian Federation.
Choosing from such a wide range of plants is not that difficult. It is important to always take into account the particular climate and care for a particular culture.
Wish you a chocolate mood in the garden!
