Heavy pine (lat. Pinus ponderosa) - a large coniferous tree of the Pine genus (Latin Pinus) of the Pine family (Latin Pinaceae). The plant is often called"
Pine yellow" or"
Oregon pine ”, Because the tree comes from North America. Heavy pine is distinguished by its large size and heavy wood, dense and lush coniferous foliage, winged seeds and high resistance to fires, which periodically easily destroy other types of trees, for example, oaks.

As for the specific name of Sosny, the Latin word “ponderosa” is translated into Russian as “heavyweight”. This epithet was assigned to Pine by Scottish botanist David Douglas in 1829, based on the heavy wood of the tree. During his three years in Oregon, David Douglas did a tremendous job of studying American plants unknown in Europe. More than two hundred new plants and their seeds were sent by Douglas from North America to Scotland. Among them were the seeds of the Heavy Pine.
Since heavy wood is common to other types of Pines, the tree has acquired another name, "Western yellow-pine", or "Western yellow pine". This name is based on the color of the tree bark, which distinguishes this species from other related plants. Mature and overripe individuals have yellow to orange-red bark. The bark lies on the trunk in wide plates, between which there are gaping black gaps. True, young trees cannot be distinguished by this feature, since their bark is blackish-brown, therefore such trees have their own name - "Blackjack pine".
The name "Oregon Pine" immediately shows where this evergreen tall beauty comes from.
Description
The heavy pine is the record holder for the height among its relatives. In October 2011, professional foresters measured the height of one Pine growing in Oregon. The measuring tape showed 81.77 meters. Thus, the Heavy Pine was on the second step of the high-rise pedestal among all the pines of our planet, yielding first place to the Sugar pine, whose Latin name is “Pinus lambertiana” (Lambert's Pine).
In addition to its high height and yellow-orange fissured bark, the heavy pine is distinguished by bright green long needles, gathering in groups of three pieces and giving the tree a special color. The length of the needles is different for the five existing subspecies of Pine Pine. The Pacific subspecies is famous for the longest needles (19, 8 cm). The needles are not only long, but also flexible, forming lush groups of three needles. Thick, almost vertically arranged branches of the tree, covered with a thick carpet of long needles, resemble a fox's tail, albeit green in color.
Some botanists believe that Heavy Pine also has a characteristic smell of turpentine, which indicates an increased content of terpenes in the tree (a class of hydrocarbons found in conifers). But others do not smell such a special smell.
Heavy pine is a very decorative tree. But due to its gigantic size, it is not suitable for any garden.
Ordeal
Despite its power, the Heavy Pine was partially burned and felled, participating in a nuclear weapons test operation in 1953 at a test site in Nevada, where 145 large trees were transported and planted. The blast wave did not spare the powerful creation of the Almighty, teaching an illustrative example to people. But for many, unfortunately, such lessons are not indicative.
