Quinoa (lat. Atriplex) - a genus of annual or perennial grasses, dwarf shrubs and shrubs of the Amaranth family. The genus has about 250 species (according to other sources, only 100 species). Natural range - tropical and temperate regions of the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. Most of the cultivated species come from Australia and the United States.
Characteristics of culture
Quinoa is a herbaceous plant, shrub or shrub with alternate, whole leaves of green color. The foliage of some species is covered with silvery hairs. The flowers are unisexual, the females are equipped with two bracts, the males - with a five-membered perianth. In Russia, the swan is considered a malicious weed, and this is despite the fact that the plants have nutritional and medicinal properties. Previously, quinoa was actively used in the preparation of rye bread, its seeds were ground and added to rye flour.
The subtleties of growing
For many gardeners and gardeners, quinoa remains a weed, but some have already appreciated its positive aspects. Quinoa is an excellent vegetable herb, and today there are several food and medicinal species on the Russian market. Some types of quinoa are used as ornamental plants. Quinoa greens do not differ in special taste characteristics, but they are rich in vitamins and other useful substances. It can be used in vegetable salads, soups and other dishes.
Garden quinoa (this particular species is used in cooking) prefers well-moistened, loose, fertile soils with a neutral pH reaction. On dry soils, the leaves become smaller and become too hard, which means they are not suitable for consumption. Foreign varieties are able to develop normally on all types of soils, including saline and swampy, but in this case the quality of greenery leaves much to be desired.
Swan is sown under shelter in autumn. Spring sowing is not prohibited. Sowing can be done in several terms, this will allow you to get juicy greens throughout the gardening period. Swan is sown in an ordinary way. The optimal distance between the rows is 30-35 cm. Before sowing, the seeds are soaked for a day in warm water. Seedlings appear on the 7-8th day.
Care
Care is standard: regular watering, shallow loosening, periodic thinning, weeding and protection from pests and diseases. Important: watering is required, otherwise the forming greens will not be juicy and tender. Top dressing is welcome; one application of complex mineral fertilizers is enough per season. Top dressing is carried out after the third thinning, that is, at the beginning of summer.
Plants are rarely affected by pests and diseases, however, if optimal conditions are not observed, the quinoa is damaged by aphids or beet weevils. For pest control, organic preparations are used - various infusions and decoctions. Chemistry is used as a last resort. The first cut of fresh and juicy greens is carried out after 25-30 days or when the plants reach a height of 18-20 cm.
