Cypress (Latin Cupressus) - a genus of plants belonging to the Cypress family of the same name (Latin Cupressaceae). As representatives of the coniferous kingdom of the planet, plants of the Cypress genus have peculiar leaves that look like needles in young specimens, and become scaly in older specimens. Being evergreen, they renew their leaves with a certain frequency, because nothing is eternal in our world. Their dark greenery inspired a sad mood on ancient people and was associated with death. But Christians were able to discern in plants another, more attractive to humans, quality of cypress, making it a symbol of eternal life.

What's in your name

The name "Cypress" was once a human name, which they tried to call people slender and outwardly attractive. Although the inner character of such people did not always correspond to their beautiful appearance.

The character of the owner of the name "Cypress" could have notes of arrogance, ruthlessness, or, on the contrary, could be very impressionable and compassionate. Such outwardly different character traits, oddly enough, aroused sympathy among the gods and a desire to turn such people into plants, which they periodically did. Legends have brought to our days just such a way of the appearance of plants of the Cypress genus on Earth.

Although, as geologists say, finding fossilized remains of Cypress in rocks that are tens of millions of years old, these types of plants appeared on planet Earth much earlier than the ancient Greek gods, and even more so much earlier than man appeared on it.

Description

The popularity of Cypresses in the design of parks and gardens has allowed gardeners to diversify the natural look of large shrubs and trees, giving them different shapes and sizes. However, among the cypresses grown in the culture, specimens with a pyramidal crown shape still prevail, confirming a person's opinion about the harmony of a natural creature. If shrubs can reach 5 meters in height, then the crown of trees rises to the heavens to a height of 40 meters.

The variability of the shape of the leaves, depending on the age of the individual, is interesting. If up to two years of age the stems of the plant are covered with needle-shaped leaves, similar to other coniferous representatives of the plant world, then, as it gets older, the plant grows overgrown with scale-like leaves, which make it more like a Fern. The length of the scaly leaves is three times shorter than the needle leaves (from 0.2 to 0.6 cm - scaly; from 0.5 to 1.5 cm - needle).

The leaves do not like loneliness, and therefore they sit on the stem in cross-shaped pairs until it comes time to give way to new ones, which happens once every 3-5 years.

Both female and male buds live on the same plant. Female cones are spherical or ovoid and are formed by protective scales. After pollination, long maturation takes place, requiring 2-2.5 times longer than it takes to form a human child.

Mature female bumps behave differently. Some immediately open scaly barriers, giving freedom to winged small seeds. Others fall into the soil unopened to preserve the seeds in case of occasional fires that lick off all vegetation from the surface of the earth, including mature cypress trees. Then the cones release their seeds at will to revive new slender Cypresses on the ashes. Buds can remain viable for up to several years.
