Acidanthera (Latin Acidanthera) Is a flowering plant from the Iris family. The second name is fragrant gladiolus.

Description

Acidantera is a beautiful corm perennial, the height of which can reach one hundred and twenty centimeters. The light green leaves of this plant can be either xiphoid or linear.

Fragrant flowers of acidants grow up to twelve centimeters in diameter. They are painted in creamy-white tones pleasant to the eye, and a rather large blackish-red speck flaunts in the center of each flower. All flowers are collected in graceful eight-flowered spike-shaped inflorescences. Flowering acidantera usually starts in August and continues throughout September. By the way, the flowers of this plant not only smell amazing, but also do not fall off after the rains!

In total, there are about forty species in the genus Acidantera.

Where grows

Acidantera grows mainly in the tropics, and most often it can be seen in tropical or southern regions of Africa. Ethiopia is considered to be the birthplace of acidantera bicolor.

Usage

In the culture, mainly acidantera bicolor is grown - it is considered a real decoration of almost any garden. In regions with a mild climate, it is often grown directly in the open field, while in colder regions it is grown mainly in greenhouses. This wonderful plant is great for growing in flower beds, flower beds and mixborders (in the middle), as well as in container or specimen plantings. Bouquets of acidantera will also stand perfectly in cut, but it is important to take into account that in too small rooms a very strong aroma will come from such bouquets.

Growing and caring

Acidantera should only be grown in sunny areas. However, a little shading is also quite acceptable. It is important to take into account that this moisture-loving beauty prefers slightly acidic, fertile and fairly light soils. As for high air temperatures, the heat-loving acidantera tolerates them quite well.

In order to grow acidantera in containers, they usually take twelve or fifteen centimeter pots, in each of which they place either one onion or several at once.

Water the acidander should be watered sparingly, but regularly. However, waterlogging should not be allowed under any circumstances. Mulching, as well as systematic feeding will not be superfluous. And fading flowers must be removed in a timely manner.

Acidantera are propagated either by corms or by children. Pre-prepared corms are planted immediately into the ground, approximately at the end of April or in May, deepening them by eight to twelve centimeters and maintaining a distance of twelve to twenty centimeters between them. It is possible and in advance to grow them a little in pots or special greenhouses - with this approach, the acidantera will please with a longer and more abundant flowering. And for the winter, corms should be dug up with the children, sending them for storage in a room with a temperature within fifteen to sixteen degrees. As for sowing seeds for seedlings, it is usually done in winter. And you should not wait for the flowering of acidantera immediately in the first year - usually it is possible to admire them only two or three years later.

Sometimes the bulbs of acidantera can be affected by rot (dry or soft) or attacked by ticks, thrips or snails. To protect the corms from rot, it is recommended that they be thoroughly disinfected with high-quality fungicides immediately before planting.
