Veinik (lat. Calamagrostis) Is a large genus of perennial plants of the Cereals family. The genus includes over 200 species. In nature, it is found almost everywhere, including the northern regions of Russia. Typical habitats are swampy areas, thickets of shrubs with moist soil, forest clearings, river valleys, wet meadows, rocks.

Characteristics of culture

Reed grass is represented by perennial herbaceous plants, which reach a height of 1, 5 - 2 m. They are characterized by green, glossy, arcuate-curved foliage and fluffy panicles of cream, green, brown, pink or purple color. By autumn, the panicles acquire a silvery or pearl color. Many species are very attractive in summer and autumn, therefore they deserve the attention of gardeners and florists. They look good against the background of ornamental shrubs, along lawns, near water bodies (many species like dampness). Almost all types are suitable for making winter bouquets.

Common types

Weinik unnoticed (lat. Calamagrostis neglecta) represented by plants up to 100 cm high with a creeping long rhizome. The stems of the species are red, the foliage is flat, rough to the touch, narrow. Panicles up to 15 cm long, narrowed, spike-shaped, brown or purple. The species is extremely picky about the place of growth. He loves wet areas, so you can plant him along the pond.

Sharp reed reed (lat. Calamagrostis acutiflora) represented by plants over 150 cm high. It is characterized by a creeping rhizome, golden panicles that form in the middle of summer. Unlike reed grass, unnoticed grows well on dry soils. Experts note that the reed reed is a natural hybrid of reed reed and ground reed.

Reed grass smelly (lat. Calamagrostis anthoxanthoides) represented by plants no more than 60 cm high with a creeping rhizome. In the process of growth, the species forms dense turf. Inflorescences are paniculate, lush, can have a cylindrical or spike-like shape. The color is most often pink, less often golden, always with shine. Flowering is observed throughout the summer. It is suitable for creating alpine slides, since it has a short stature.

Ground reed (lat. Calamagrostis epigeios) represented by plants over 100 cm in height. It is characterized by a long root, rough gray-green foliage, a long wide panicle of pink color. By autumn, the panicle takes on a straw hue. The species is suitable for landscaping personal plots, provides protection of other ornamental crops against the wind. Due to the fact that the plant has a long root, it is important to restrain its growth by means of slate dug into the soil.

Reed reed (lat. Calamagrostis arundinacea) represented by plants with a height of half a meter. It is characterized by rough narrow foliage, a fluffy spikelet panicle of lilac or green color. Used in breeding. On sale you can find varieties that form narrow panicles of a golden color. The main species and its varieties are suitable for the design of the coastal zone of water bodies. Also, inflorescences are collected in order to create winter bouquets.

Growing features

Depending on the type, cultivation is possible both in sunny and semi-shaded areas. All representatives of the genus tolerate heat well, and are also winter-hardy. The reeds are not too demanding for soil conditions. Most of them grow well in damp, swampy and peaty soils. No fertilization is needed, although some species and varieties develop better on fertile soils. The main thing that needs to be provided to the plant in the process of leaving is the suppression of overgrowth; for these purposes, you can use slate. If you do not restrict the growth of roots, then they can quickly fill large areas.
