Man is so strangely made. Looking at the skillfully made flowers of paper, matter or stone, he says with delight: "How alive!" Considering the rosette of the living succulent leaves of the Echeveria plant, he gives it the name "stone rose" or "stone flower"
Echeveria clan
The genus Echeveria or Echeveria, depending on how you read the combination of two Latin letters "ch", consists of perennial succulent plants. Their succulent leaves can form a basal fleshy rosette, or take the form of a succulent low shrub. The white, yellow or orange bell-shaped flowers of Echeveria are collected in a racemose or spike-shaped inflorescence.
The name gives rise to different fantasies, playing on the word "echeveria", but everything turns out to be much simpler. The title immortalizes the name of a Mexican artist who painted the flora of his country for books about plants. His name is Atanasio Echeverria. And the succulent plant echeveria is the artist's compatriot.
Varieties
•
Echeveria bright red (Echeveria coccinea) - juicy pubescent leaves form a basal rosette. Red flowers with a yellow border on a branched peduncle.
•
Echeveria compact (Echeveria compacta) - small rosettes of light green leaves up to 10 cm high in summer are decorated with dark red flowers.
•
Echeveria Derenberg (Echeveria derenbergii) - fleshy rosettes of bluish leaves with a red edge and brushes of orange flowers.
•
Echeveria elegant (Echeveria elegans) - elegance is expressed by light bluish leaves and flowers of a delicate pink color.
•
Echeveria humpback-flowered (Echeveria gibbiflora) is a rather tall plant, strong stems which rise up to 65 cm. Leaves can be of various shades, from bluish to light pink. Red inflorescences complete the composition.
•
Echeveria one-sided gray (Echeveria secunda glauca) - due to its resistance to cold, it is popular with flower growers. Leaves of medium size form large bluish-green rosettes. Many lateral rosettes are formed, giving life to new plants. The inflorescences surprise with the combination of two shades in one flower: outer red and inner yellow.
•
Echeveria bristly (Echeveria setosa) - with red flowers and a rosette of leaves covered with white fluff.
Cultivation of echeveria
Echeveria cannot be grown outdoors in areas with harsh winters, so it is a houseplant there. Under favorable conditions of a mild climate, juicy rosettes of leaves quickly cover the area with a solid carpet.
The soil for the plant needs light, permeable soil. The flowerpots are filled with a mixture of earth and sand. When planting, a full long-acting mineral fertilizer is applied to the soil. During the warm period, they are fed a couple of times with complex liquid fertilizer.
Echeveria prefers well-lit places, protected from drafts and cold winds. At temperatures below plus 4 degrees, the plant refuses to live.
Watering is needed in moderation, but frequent. In winter, water less frequently to keep the soil slightly moist.
So that the appearance of the plant does not upset the owner, as a rule, in the spring, you should get rid of damaged leaves or other parts of the plant.
Reproduction and transplantation
Propagated by seeds, separation of daughter rosettes, leaf cuttings. Daughter side sockets are separated in April, dried, rooted and transplanted into pots.
A transplant, if necessary, a more spacious pot is carried out in the spring, using a soil similar to the main cultivation.
When purchasing seedlings from the store, make sure that the plants are free of pests.
Diseases and pests
Leaves may rust. Roots and pubescent leaves love to attack worms.
