A fluffy beauty with the abilities of plant mosses and a mysterious fern can go without water for a long time, turning into a ball of dry twigs, which comes to life very quickly if moistened with water. The magic water very quickly turns a dry nondescript ball into a beautiful rosette of fluffy leaves
Rod Selaginella
Several hundred species of plants with a delightful appearance and magical abilities are combined into a genus
Selaginella (Selaginella), or
Plaunok … Absent-minded housewives, forgetting to water the pot miracle in time, are horrified to discover the twisted leaves of the "dead" plant. Their horror gives way to delight, when, under the influence of moisture, Selaginella literally spreads its green twigs before our eyes, turning again into a fluffy creation of nature.
For the most part, these are evergreens with soft leaves, similar to frond (leaves) of a fern, giving Selaginella the appearance of a fluffy miniature Christmas tree. The leaves are matte or shiny, colored in different tones of green, from light to dark. Sometimes there is a thin yellow pattern on the leaves. Branched shoots ascending or creeping.
Varieties
* Selaginella scaly (Selaginella lepidophylla) - This plant lives in deserts, including the Negev desert, which occupies 60 percent of Israel's territory, where the Mother of God noticed her, admiring the plant's reviving power. For the ability of Selaginella scaly-leaved to resurrect under the influence of moisture from a dry state, it was called “
Jericho rose ».
In desert conditions, its shoots (5 to 10 cm long) bend, forming a dry ball, which again turns into a beautiful fluffy plant, having received life-giving moisture.
* Selaginella Krausa (Selaginella kraussiana) - a taller plant, growing up to 30 cm. Representative of the flora of South Africa with green glossy leaves.
* Selaginella Martens (Selaginella martensii) is the most decorative species that came to our region from Mexico. The shoots of the plant reach a length of 15-30 cm, forming fan-shaped fluffy leaves of a dark green color. There are varieties that differ in the variegated color of the leaves. Dark greens are enlivened by white or yellow spots.
* Selaginella flat (Selaginella plana) is a species from temperate climatic zones, and therefore it can be grown in the open field, or in pots, with exposing them to shady places in the garden.
* Selaginella legless (Selaginella apoda) - a resident of the damp areas of the eastern part of the United States, the most resistant species.
Growing
All types of Selaginella are created by nature for shady places and love moist soil, with the exception, perhaps, of the Scaly-leaved Selaginella. But you should not overdry it, so that it does not turn into a dry ball. True, it was customary to pass such "balls" from generation to generation along with inherited material values. Each new generation, reviving Selaginella for the next holiday, remembered their ancestors and thanked them for the life given to them.
From April to October, twice a month, the plant is fed with complex fertilizer, based on 10 grams of fertilizer per bucket of water.
The air temperature is different for different species, ranging from plus 5 to plus 21 degrees.
Dry leaves are removed to maintain the appearance. At the same time, it is important not to confuse them with those that were simply not watered in a timely manner.
Reproduction
In the trade, Selaginella is sometimes sold under the name "Jericho Rose" - a symbol of life reviving from nothingness, a plant marked by the Mother of God herself.
For self-propagation, you can use the division of the bush during the spring transplant into a new pot. To do this, 5-centimeter parts are separated from the rhizome and planted in moist peat, providing 20 degrees Celsius.
Sowing of spores on a peat surface is rarely used.
Enemies
Subject to the rules of agricultural technology, the plant does not have problems.
