A perennial unpretentious plant strikes with power, rising above the earth's surface by 1.5-2 meters. A strong stem is hugged by large leaves covered with a thick whitish downy, giving the Mullein a bearded look. It was for this "beard" that he got his Latin name, and he is called Mullein in Russia. Inflorescences collected from beautiful flowers correspond to the size of the plant
Rod Verbaskum
The genus Verbascum or Mullein unites several hundred species of plants, which can be perennial or biennial, herbaceous or semi-shrub.
Regardless of the species, all of them are resistant to high and low temperatures, erect strong peduncles, pubescent leaves, spike-shaped or paniculate inflorescences collected from beautiful flowers. Most of them are not afraid of drought, that is, they are xerophytes.
Depending on the height of the plant, some are suitable for borders and flower beds, others for rock gardens.
Types for borders and flower beds
•
Common mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is a tall biennial (up to 2 m tall) with an erect peduncle. Oblong large leaves with a serrated edge tightly fit the peduncle on all sides, outwardly resembling the ears of a bear. Therefore, the plant is also called
"Bear's ear" … The peduncle is crowned with a cluster-inflorescence of light yellow flowers.
•
Mullein purple (Verbascum phoeniceum) - a less tall biennial, growing up to a meter in height, is one of the most beautiful among mullein. Dark green leaves with slight pubescence form a rosette, from which rare inflorescences of a brush of purple flowers of different shades are born in summer.
•
Black mullein (Verbascum nigrum) is a perennial that grows up to 1 meter. The stem is covered with ovate-elongated leaves densely pubescent from below, which are petioled in the lower part of the stem, and sessile above. The edge of the leaf is serrated. Throughout the summer, small flowers with yellow petals and a red spot in the center bloom, collected in inflorescences, brushes or panicles.
•
Hybrids - hybrids are very popular, distinguished by a variety of flower colors, beauty of leaves, endurance and unpretentiousness.
Types for rock gardens
•
Prickly mullein (Verbascum spinosum) is a low shrub with dark green lanceolate thorny leaves. The cluster inflorescences are collected from light yellow flowers.
•
Verbascum dumulosum (Verbascum dumulosum) is a shrub with olive-green pubescent oval leaves and cluster inflorescences, collected from light yellow flowers, which have a purple core.
•
Hybrid - from the two species described above, a hybrid was bred with dark olive-green lanceolate pubescent leaves and carpal inflorescences of bright yellow flowers.
Growing
They love sunny places.
The soil should be light and free of excess moisture. Dry soil is preferred for most species. When planting, organic fertilizer is applied to the soil.
Due to the long taproot, it is painful to transfer the transplant.
After flowering, the aerial part of most species dies off. Faded inflorescences are removed so that new buds form earlier, prolonging the life of the plant. In tall species grown in curbs and in flower beds, the aerial part is cut off at the root before winter.
Reproduction
Propagated by seeds, cuttings, dividing the bush.
Diseases and pests
In hot and dry climates, spider mites like to attack mullein.
