The time of spring flowering of crocuses, tulips, daffodils, chionodox, woods and other primroses is passing. A dull picture with wilting leaves appears before our eyes. In summer, free areas are actively inhabited by weeds. The question arises: "How to fill the empty spaces?"
You cannot cut off foliage immediately after flowering. Plants must go through the full cycle of their development - from germination to the formation of daughter bulbs. In the summer, primroses accumulate nutrients from the remaining leaves for further safe wintering. Early removal of the aerial part will eventually lead to the depletion of the mother liquors and their death. Plants are more often affected by bacterial diseases, flowering weakens next year.
There are several ways to solve this problem:
1. A combination of early flowering crops with root perennials.
2. Cleaning for ripening in the shade.
3. Planting bulbs in special baskets.
4. Landing in the background.
5. Braiding.
6. Organization of prefabricated flower beds with annuals.
Let's take a closer look at each method.
Combination with perennials
Experts recommend not planting bulbs in a single large array. It is better to alternate spring specimens with rows of rhizome perennials. For these purposes, ferns, hosts, daylilies, delphiniums, Gaillardia, Rudbeckia are suitable.
The leaves of these plants grow back much later. In the future, they will close the empty places and yellowness. The distances between the bushes are left with a margin of 30-40 cm, so that when the bulbs are excavated after 3 years, they do not damage the roots of the neighbors.
Replenishing in the shade
If it's time to divide the bulbs, then after flowering they are dug out carefully with a large clod of earth. Put tightly in a bucket with holes in the bottom, sprinkle with additional soil, compacting it. Transfer the container to the shade, under the bushes, the crown of trees for further ripening.
Periodically check the moisture content of the soil, preventing it from overdrying. Water in small doses if necessary. After wilting, the leaves are removed for storage until autumn planting.
Planting in baskets
In recent years, convenient bulb baskets have appeared in stores. Plants planted in such containers are easy to dig up after flowering without damaging the roots. They are transferred with a lump of earth adhered from all sides to a cool place. Buried under the crown of trees until the end of the growing season. In the fall, they return to their original place.
Landing in the background
If the flower beds are located near a fence or shrubs, then primroses are planted in the background. In the summer, neighbors growing back later will cover them with their green mass.
Weaving braids
For long and soft leaves of muscari, crocuses, daffodils, braids are used. Each strand consists of 3-5 stripes. They braid loosely so as not to break the plants. If there are few bushes, then they are hidden under neighboring perennials.
With a large number of braids, various patterns are laid out, which give the flower beds an unusual charm, becoming an element of garden design. They look interesting and look neater than just drying leaves.
Summer decoration
When laying beds with bulbs, I leave large aisles, 2 times higher than the norm. At the end of May, I divide them exactly in the middle, cut grooves, spill them with water.
I plant prepared seedlings of annual flowers in this place: marigolds, zinnias, statice, purslane, gatsania. For the first time, powerful tulip leaves shade the summer bushes that have not yet matured after transplantation, creating protection from the wind for them. When the primroses finish growing, the planted neighbors grow. Therefore, flower beds always look beautiful and bright.
On your sites, you can choose any of the proposed methods. The main conditions: ease of processing, neat appearance, creation of optimal comfort for all flowers in the flower bed.
