Bright Buzulnik

The bright flowers of Buzulnik, reminiscent of tongues of flame, will leave a rare flower lover indifferent. You can meet this wonderful plant in forest glades, along the banks of various reservoirs and in other rather humid areas of the European part of Russia, as well as in Southeast and East Asia. Buzulnik is a good solution in landscape design, and also serves as one of the elements in drawing up various bouquets of fresh flowers

Getting to know the plant

This beautiful perennial is a member of the Asteraceae family (otherwise called Asteraceae). Buzulnik is also called ligularia or ligularia.

The fibrous root system of this bright, handsome man is equipped with cord-like and rather long roots. The leaves in most of its species form bizarre basal rosettes. The leaves themselves are quite large, have a heart-shaped or funny kidney-shaped or triangular shape. They are jagged at the edges and slightly pubescent, often finger-split. In length, they usually reach 50 - 60 cm, and their width is approximately 60 - 70 cm. All leaves are located on petioles and have a green, reddish-brownish, greenish-purple or dark green saturated color. In some varieties of buzulnik, the leaves are characterized by a double color.

From the flowers of the plant, baskets are formed, which can be both large and medium in size. Bright marginal flowers with elongated lingual limbs look much more spectacular than inconspicuous tubular flowers. The baskets themselves, depending on the type of this aquatic plant, form both spike-shaped, paniculate and corymbose, and racemose inflorescences. The color of the flowers can vary from pale yellow to orange (and sometimes even slightly reddish) shades. The fruits of the buzulnik are quite amusing - achenes with playful tufts.

In total, there are about 180 species of buzulnik, and of them only 10 species are cultivated so far, and so far only two of them are used in landscape design.

How to grow

The best option for the development of the buzulnik will be the banks of reservoirs or well-moistened clay soils. This handsome man does not tolerate direct sunlight, but the shadow is very welcome. However, for its cultivation, it is still better to select areas protected from the piercing wind.

Reproduction of the handsome buzulnik occurs by dividing the bushes, as well as by seeds. Seeds in central Russia ripen very well, but the plants bred in this way bloom only in the third or fourth year. As for the division, it is carried out from May to September. It has been noticed that the buzulnik takes root best of all when it is divided in spring. This process is not particularly laborious: the necessary part is cut off from the mother bush with a shovel, which is then washed in clean water and cut into several divisions so that one growth bud remains on each of them. The resulting sections should be powdered with charcoal or treated with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. Then the delenki begin to be planted in open ground. Before starting planting, it is recommended to add the well-known wood ash, as well as superphosphate and humus to the soil. During planting, tiny growth buds should be placed 3 to 5 cm from the soil surface. And between the plants themselves, the gaps should be approximately 80 - 100 mm.

Plant care is not difficult. The main thing is to provide the buzulnik with constant abundant watering, since drought has an extremely negative effect on its growth. This plant will not refuse feeding either. Organic and mineral fertilizers are applied twice: until stable frosts are established in autumn, and also in spring. Good winter hardiness of the wonderful buzulnik allows it to do without shelter in the cold season.

It is advisable to tie tall plants to supports during their flowering, and at the end of flowering, the peduncles should be cut off. Since a buzulnik can easily grow for 15 years on the same site, there is no need for its regular transplant. It is quite resistant to pests and diseases, but extremely rarely it can still be affected by powdery mildew, spider mites, snails and slugs.
