For Russian open spaces with cold winters, exotic Schinus will fit only as a houseplant, which grows more like a liana than a tree. At home, its fruits are used instead of pepper, resin is mined, its dense, high-quality wood is used and just enjoy an ornamental plant
The planet Mars
Plants of the genus Schinus (Schinus), or Pepper tree, were born under the sign of the planet Mars, which put magical powers in them. Since ancient times, people began to use these forces, using tree branches to expel diseases from the human body, to cleanse the body of harmful chemical toxins and evil spirits. Red berries were used to make necklaces and bracelets that protect against dark forces.
By the way, on the night of August 26-27 this year (2015), the planet Mars is going to approach the Earth so close that it will create the illusion of the presence of an additional Moon in the sky. If the sky on this night is not covered with dense clouds, it will be possible to become an observer of a rare celestial phenomenon, which next time will be seen only by our great-great-great-grandchildren or great-great-great-great-grandchildren, since a repetition of such an event will happen in 2287 year.
Rod Schinus
Evergreen shrubs and trees, stretching out to the sun up to a height of 6 meters, look like gentle creatures of nature, saturated with resinous substances. The odd-pinnate compound leaves are arranged in the next order on the long hanging branches of the schinus.
Yellowish-white small flowers are strictly divided into male and female, blooming on the branches in June-July. The reddish fruit is a fleshy drupe with a lignified, burning seed. The seeds can irritate the mucous membrane of the digestive organs, so their use as a spice replacing pepper should be treated with caution. The Italians call the fruit of the schinus a "false pepper".
Varieties
•
Schinum Molle (Schinus molle) - otherwise the plant is called the "Peruvian Pepper Tree", respectfully starting each word with a capital letter. A cracking gray-brown bark covers a twisting trunk, which is crowned with a round, rare crown of drooping branches. Curved, linear-lanceolate leaves with a leathery green surface, as a rule, have a jagged edge. Rare inflorescences-panicles of greenish-yellow flowers hang sadly in tune with drooping branches. They are being replaced by reddish berries with burning seeds inside, which people use instead of the bitter pepper we are used to.
•
Schinus pistachio (Schinus terebinthifolius) - depending on the place of growth, the botanical name for schinus pistachio takes different names: in Florida it is the Florida Pepper Tree, in Brazil it is the Brazilian (pink) Pepper Tree.
The branches of the umbrella-shaped crown are covered with dark green leaves. From inconspicuous yellowish-white flowers, like from an ugly duckling - a swan, beautiful, however, not white, like a swan, but bright red fruits, hanging on the tree in dense clusters, appear.
The fragrant sap of the tree is deceiving and burning, leaves burns on the skin. But from the resin is extracted "missionary balm" used by industry. Lovers of wood products appreciate the hard and dense wood of the schinus.
Growing
Heat-loving and delicate schinuses can be grown outdoors only in areas with a mild climate, for example, on the Black Sea coast, because sea spray is only a joy to them. Temperatures below minus 7 degrees have a detrimental effect on them. Therefore, in the northern regions, schinus can only be grown indoors.
Plants love the open sun and are afraid of the cold wind.
Although plants have no predilections for soils, fertile, organic-rich soil with good drainage will be more favorable.
To form the shape of the plant, they periodically resort to pruning the shoots.
The schinus immune system does an excellent job of protecting the plant from diseases and pests.
Reproduction
More often propagated by autumn sowing of seeds with high germination. Less commonly, cuttings and air layers.
