From an early age, many children like to tinker in the country in the garden in their personal small garden. So that during the winter months the baby's interest in gardening does not fade away, teach your child how to forcing greenery in a room environment
Stock up on vitamins
January is rich in holidays that rarely pass without a family feast. And every housewife knows how quickly and a lot on such days greens are spent on cooking and decorating dishes. In the winter season, its purchase is especially expensive, and the quality of such a purchase can only be guessed at … Can you be sure that in the pursuit of profit, the manufacturer did not add a little more fertilizers than is required to increase the yield of the demanded product?
The way out is the device of a homemade small garden bed in room conditions. With minimal expenditure on consumables, you can get a full-fledged conveyor of environmentally friendly greenery. Even a child can cope with an indoor garden and forcing onions. And for sure your baby will be proud that thanks to his efforts the family will be provided with vitamin greens throughout the winter.
Container for indoor garden
Forcing green onions will take place in a humid environment. Therefore, the container must be prepared such that it will not get wet from watering. Depending on the chosen substrate in which the bulb will sit, this can be:
• wooden box;
• tetrapak from juice or milk;
• plastic box;
• PVC bag;
• glass jar and other suitable containers.
It is advisable to disinfect the container before filling with the substrate. A solution of potassium permanganate is suitable for this.
Nutrient substrate or water?
Instead of earth, gravel, expanded clay, and wet sand are used as a substrate. The "soil" is placed in a thin layer on the bottom of the container and moistened with water at room temperature. The water level should not be high. It is enough to moisten only the bottom of the bulb and long roots.
Forcing greens can be carried out without a substrate, only in water. It is easier, but this way the bulb will rot more often. The smell of rot, moreover, attracts midges, and forcing greenery for a child will no longer seem such an interesting activity.
Top dressing
Since we agreed to grow environmentally friendly greens, we will not complicate the process for the baby by calculating the fertilizer rate. Most of the essential nutrients for a lush green bed are already hidden in the bulb itself. However, it will be useful to add wood ash to the water for irrigation - 5 g per 1 liter.
Bulb sizes
The size of the planting material determines the seasonality. At the very beginning of winter, it is better to take sets for forcing. Sampling is used in the middle of winter. And the closer the spring, the larger the bulbs are picked up.
Where to get planting material
Everything is simple - the most ordinary onion is enough. If earlier you bypassed counters with sprouted specimens as substandard, then for distillation this is just what you need!
Or see if you have any bulbs with green feathers emerging in your winter stocks. These will give a crop in a week.
How to awaken an onion
If there is no onion with a green tail, it will take some time to prepare the vegetable for distillation. But this is also not difficult:
1. Bulbs are dipped in warm water and left in a warm place for a day.
2. Cut off the head (top) to a height of 1-1.5 cm.
3. Placed in a container with a moist substrate, bottom down.
Instead of soaking in warm water for a day, you can resort to another method - make cuts on the side of the neck of the bulb by a third of the height of the vegetable and leave for three days in a warm, well-ventilated room. For example, in the kitchen.
As soon as the greenery appears, the container is given a sufficiently illuminated place. Then the feather will be a rich bright green.
Conduct an interesting cognitive experiment with your child. Remove one sprouted onion in a dark place or in the refrigerator and watch the color of the greens change. At first, it will turn yellow, and then it will become completely colorless. This makes it easier for children to understand the importance of lighting in growing plants.
Harvesting
Cut off the first leaves from the outer feathers. Do not overexpose the greens on the window, otherwise they will lose their taste and begin to dry out. One bulb produces several green crops per season.
