Bright and juicy oranges are loved by both adults and children. Nowadays, oranges can always be found on sale, however, today we also often face the need to preserve these sunny fruits for a certain period of time. How can you properly store these wonderful all-season fruits so that they remain juicy and flavorful? In fact, everything is very simple
How to store?
After purchase, oranges last well for an average of two weeks. Moreover, unlike tangerines, they can be kept for about a week even at room temperature. Nevertheless, in order to keep the oranges in their best shape, it is recommended to place them in the refrigerator, in a special compartment for fruits.
If you have decided to store oranges at room temperature, it is important not to forget that in such conditions they are usually stored for no more than a week. And since oranges do not welcome light or direct sunlight, it is recommended to place them in a cool and dark place.
The most optimal temperature range for storing these sunny fruits is between three and eight degrees. It is noteworthy that different varieties of oranges have different shelf life: some fruits can be stored for months, while others do not lie even for several days.
To extend the shelf life of oranges, some hostesses alternate the temperature: after keeping the citrus fruits in the refrigerator for about a day, they are subsequently transferred to a room with room temperature for several hours, and after this time, the bright fruits are returned to the cold again. By the way, it is recommended to pay attention to this storage method for everyone who wants to keep oranges as long as possible. Vegetable oil will also help keep citrus fruits longer - they lightly rub the skin of the fruit (by the way, this method works great with any citrus fruits).
At a temperature of about two degrees, any oranges will be perfectly stored from two weeks to two months, a temperature regime in the range of two to four degrees will preserve yellow oranges for several months, and unripe oranges will be perfectly stored for about five months at a temperature of five to six degrees.
It is quite realistic to keep oranges in the cellar, however, for their safe storage, you will need to comply with a number of conditions: the humidity in the cellar should not be lower than 80%, the temperature should be between five and ten degrees, and, finally, the cellar must be dark and well ventilated. In this case, the fruits wrapped in paper are laid out in one layer on the shelves.
Useful Tips
Oranges sent for storage should never be kept in polyethylene - the humid environment formed in this situation, combined with a lack of air, creates favorable conditions for the speedy spoilage and rot of these juicy fruits. It is best to use clean cardboard boxes to store them, or simply wrap each orange in paper. Those fruits that have been wrapped in ordinary napkins are also perfectly preserved.
During storage, it is not recommended to place oranges in close proximity to any other fruit. And it is also better not to store them next to other products - citrus fruits can easily deteriorate under the influence of components accelerating the processes of decay, and other products often absorb the smell of stored oranges, which is also not very pleasant.
If a large number of fruits have been sent for storage, then from time to time they must be inspected for rotting and tainted oranges must be removed in a timely manner. However, if it was initially known that the fruits are purchased for long-term storage, it is best to opt for slightly unripe oranges. But in this case, they should not be stored in the refrigerator, since they simply will not ripen - it is best to place the oranges in a dark place with room temperature.
