Beets and rutabagas, radishes and turnips must be removed before the fall frosts. Despite the fact that they belong to the cold-resistant group of plants, in the first half of September, the beds are already being freed from these crops. The peculiarity of their cultivation is that part of the root crop looks out of the ground, and it can suffer with a sharp drop in temperature to negative values
Stock up on root vegetables and improve your health
It is very profitable to grow table vegetables on your plots. They are distinguished by good keeping quality and will be able to provide the gardener with fresh produce throughout the cold season. In addition, these root vegetables are very beneficial to health. Among other vegetables, carrots are leading in terms of carotene content, beets equalize pressure and strengthen capillary walls. And also beets and turnips are an excellent tandem for supplying the body with mineral salts and microelements: phosphorus, potassium. Parsley, celery, turnips, rutabagas are our source of vitamins in winter, when fresh vegetables and fruits are no longer available.
Taking care of the future greenery
First of all, those vegetables are harvested, whose roots appeared on the surface of the earth. Following beets, turnips, rutabagas, they pick celery with parsley. Several copies can be left in the beds - here in early spring you can get the earliest greens. To do this, you need to additionally loosen the soil around the root crops and feed them with a garden mixture. And so that the plants are not afraid of frosts, they are huddled high, completely hidden under a layer of earth.
In addition, the timing of the collection of celery and parsley greens can be extended if you arrange peculiar beds for root crops in greenhouses, greenhouses, or even indoors. To do this, vegetables pulled from open ground are dropped in boxes with wet sand or earth with a layer of at least 12 cm. It is important that the temperature for such a green conveyor is maintained at + 8 … + 10 ° С.
When there is a desire and opportunity to forcing parsley in winter, then when laying for storage, several root crops are taken, on which the greens are not completely cut off, but short stalks 2-3 cm long are left. This is done in order not to damage the growth point. Such preparation will allow several times during the winter to collect a fresh crop of fragrant vitamin greens.
Harvesting
Root vegetables only appear rough and thick-skinned. It is actually very easy to damage the integumentary tissue. Therefore, these vegetables should be dug out very carefully. If during harvesting you notice cut root crops, you cannot lay them for long-term storage with the rest. They are set aside separately to be immediately eaten or processed: pickled, dried, used for preservation and freezing as a semi-finished product.
Before storage, the tops are cut off. It is not necessary to cut it "at the root", it is enough to cut it by the shoulders. It is not necessary to leave the harvested crop in an open field for drying in the open sun, because this way moisture evaporates from them faster and this negatively affects the quality of root crops.
