Turnip white, also called turnip, is a big lover of cabbage crops, found almost everywhere. Outwardly, it is very similar to the cabbage white, but the turnip white is characterized by more compact size. And turnip whites differ from rutabagas by the absence of a spectacular dark green bloom on the veins of the hind wings
Meet the pest
The white turnip is a diurnal butterfly, the wingspan of which reaches 35 - 40 mm. In males, one black speck is observed on the front wings, and in females, two. The hind wings of the pests are slightly yellowish from below, and from above on the front edges are equipped with black specks.
Yellowy ribbed eggs of turnip whites reach 1 mm in size and are pear-shaped. Malicious green matte caterpillars, growing up to 30 - 35 mm, are equipped with rather colorful yellow stripes on the dorsal side. They all have five pairs of abdominal (otherwise called false) and three pairs of thoracic legs. Caterpillars keep mainly on the upper sides of the leaves. In the daytime, they are most often motionless, however, if suddenly any danger begins to threaten them, they stretch their heads and raise the front parts of their tiny bodies, turning to face the danger and discovering at the same time a rather bright warning pattern given to them by nature (red with dark specks). And sometimes they throw forward a small trickle of corrosive liquid.
Angular pupae of turnip whites, 20 to 25 mm in size, are colored greenish-gray. In general, the color of the pupae is determined by the color of the substrate to which they are attached. All pupae are endowed with sharp lateral and dorsal spines, as well as black dots and three yellow longitudinal lines.
Pupae hibernate, attaching themselves with thin spider webs to tree trunks, shrub twigs, buildings, and dry plants. And already in April, cute butterflies fly out, feeding additionally on flowers for six to ten days.
Eggs are laid by white turnips mainly one at a time, placing them mainly on the undersides of the leaves. The total fertility of pests reaches an average of two hundred to four hundred eggs. After about a week and a half, tiny caterpillars hatch from the eggs, gnawing many small irregular holes in the leaves. And caterpillars of older instars destroy leaves completely, including thick leaf veins. Eighteen to twenty days later, having passed five ages, the parasites pupate, and after ten to eleven days, butterflies of the second generation fly out, the development of which occurs by analogy with the development of butterflies of the first generation.
In the northern regions of Russia, turnip whites develop in two generations per year, and in the southern regions they often give three or four generations. Caterpillars of the second, as well as subsequent generations, bite into cabbage heads, making numerous moves in them. As a result of their harmful activity, the heads of cabbage begin to rot, acquiring an unpleasant odor and turning into unusable.
How to fight
All cruciferous weeds growing on the site must be destroyed. It is recommended to plant cabbage crops as early as possible, before the turnip butterflies start flying out. And in the fall, the soil in the beds is well dug up.
In relatively small areas, harmful caterpillars are often harvested by hand, immediately destroying them. And turnip butterflies are caught, luring them with the help of light.
Against turnip whites, spraying with bleach or plant insecticides made on the basis of tobacco is often carried out. Such bacterial preparations as "Dipel", "Gomelin" and "Entobacterin" have a good effect. Against caterpillars, you can also spray with "Etaphos", "Nurell", "Anometrin", "Ambush", "Ripkord", Talkord "," Tsimbush "," Cyanox "," Belofos "," Foxim "," Sumicidin "and" Rovikurt ". All spraying should be carried out in accordance with the instructions.
