To get juicy crispy carrots by mid-June, you will have to sow them before winter. As a rule, when sown in winter, vegetables grow much larger and turn out to be much sweeter than their counterparts sown at standard times. This is due to the fact that seed germination in the soil starts in early spring - during this period the soil is well saturated with moisture, which is vital for tiny sprouts at the very beginning of their development. Thanks to this feature, carrots will begin to sprout more amicably, and they will grow much faster. And the only drawback of sowing strong orange root crops before winter is only that they are unsuitable for long-term storage

What kind of carrot to choose and where to equip the garden

Not every variety of carrots can give good shoots when sowing in winter, therefore, when choosing varieties, it is best to give preference to such as Nantes-4 and Moscow winter A-545, as well as Vitamin-6 and Shantane-2461. Carrot varieties such as Losinoostrovskaya-13 and the juicy Incomparable are also perfect. All these mid-ripening and early-ripening varieties are cold-resistant and will certainly give a rich harvest of crispy root crops.

When choosing a site suitable for winter sowing of carrots, it should be borne in mind that a bright root crop prefers loose soils. Accordingly, the chosen place must certainly be with fertile and fairly light soil, not too compacted for the winter and free from the snow cover as early as possible. And so that the spring waters do not wash the seeds out of the soil, the site must be located horizontally. If the cultivation area of the crop is dry, it is important to take care of proper snow retention as well.

Sowing carrots is best after onions and cucumbers, melons, cabbage with tomatoes and potatoes. When the harvest of these useful predecessors is harvested, all residues of vegetation should be removed from the beds and the soil should be plowed as deeply as possible, accompanying the plowing process by embedding good mineral fertilizers into the soil. If organic fertilizers were applied on this site (for example, fresh manure), then it is allowed to plant carrots on it only after two years.

It is important to manage the preparation of all beds intended for winter sowing of carrots by mid-October.

When and how to sow

It is not easy to name specific dates for sowing carrots in winter - the Russian climate is unpredictable, thaws here can easily be replaced by unexpected and severe frosts. At the same time, you need to try to guess the timing in such a way that the sown seeds do not have time to germinate before the onset of stable cold weather, otherwise their death will be inevitable. October crops in this regard can be dangerous, since the likelihood of sudden thaws in this autumn month is quite high, and if seed germination begins, the frosts that hit them will surely destroy them. Therefore, it is best to sow carrots around mid-November, when the soil is frozen. And the sowing rate should be increased by approximately 20% compared to the spring rate.

Before sowing a crunchy beauty before winter, the seeds are not soaked and, moreover, they do not germinate - prematurely dry seeds will not germinate. And to sow the tiny seeds as accurately as possible, you can get a carrot-specific planter that allows you to set the desired planting steps. Simultaneously with carrot seeds, you can sow lettuce or radish seeds - with the onset of spring they will immediately mark carrot beds, which will be very convenient for the subsequent loosening of the rows and weeding.

The algorithm for sowing carrots for the winter is as follows. The prepared seeds are poured into the grooves, trying to maintain the required sowing depth. In arid regions with light soils, it is about three centimeters, and for very dense soils - only one centimeter (subsequently, under the snow, the soil will become even more compacted). As soon as the seeds are in the grooves, they are first sprinkled with prepared dry and warm soil, and then a layer of good humus or peat a couple of centimeters thick is poured on top. And so that the soil is not blown by the wind, it is slightly compacted. As soon as the first snow falls, it is scooped up on the beds and pressed with spruce branches.

Spring formalities

With the onset of spring, when the snow begins to melt, spruce branches should be collected from the beds. It is allowed to shovel some of the snow - in this case, it will melt faster. And as soon as the snow completely disappears from the beds, low arcs are installed above them, on top of which a film or some kind of non-woven material is fixed - this will help accelerate the ripening of the carrots.

Then the dried soil is slightly loosened, and when the first juicy greens appear on the beds, they begin to combat pests and weeding.
