Experienced gardeners know that even in the most severe frosts, trees can get sunburn. This is due to the peculiarities of the January weather. On a clear sunny day, the temperature of the crust on the southern side of the trunk rises to + 20 ° С, while from the opposite edge it is approximately equal to negative air temperature. In addition, strong fluctuations in day and night degrees lead to tissue damage. How to protect pets and keep them from injury and death?
Repeated whitewashing of trees
In January, it is recommended to re-whitewash trees - boles and large branches - with milk of lime. White tends to scatter direct sunlight. This measure will help protect the bark from excessive heating, and as a result, from strong fluctuations in day and night temperatures, preventing damage and death of living tissues.
It is convenient to perform this procedure with a flat brush or brush. When you need to whitewash a large tall tree with spreading skeletal branches, and there is no ladder at hand, the tool is tied to a stick.
To prepare milk of lime, take one shovel of lime in a bucket of water. Instead of milk of lime, clay with lime or mullein is also used. To prepare the composition, follow the proportions:
• lime - 2 kg;
• clay - 1 kg;
• water - 10 l;
• you can add a little copper sulfate diluted with hot water.
There is a little secret that will allow the whitewashing to last longer: for this you need to add 2 tablespoons of powdery paste or a mill of casein glue to the solution.
Hilling boles
If the winter pleased with the snowy weather, and you, as a zealous gardener, trampled it at the trunk to warm the roots, the snow shelter is raked off before re-whitewashing. After whitewashing, the snow is returned to its place.
If you live in areas with little snow, the trunks are sprinkled with earth high. Such protection will help protect both roots and the lower part of the trunk from pestilence. An additional cover is also a layer of manure, the remaining fallen leaves.
Warm clothes for trees
Covering materials will help prevent sunburn and prevent frost damage on the trunks. For this purpose, burlap, and agrofibre, and parchment paper, and sheets of cardboard are used.
The trunk is wrapped, like a scarf, and tied with twine or wire. At the same time, make sure that the bark is not overtightened. Otherwise, you will get the opposite effect and only harm the tree. In addition, it should be borne in mind that in damp weather the burlap gets wet and needs to be changed in time.
Waste is in business
You can insulate the bark with plant residues. Suitable raw materials for this will be pumpkin tops, sunflower stalks and other similar household waste. They will serve as an excellent thermal insulation material, equally coping well with frost and burns from bright sunlight.
A decorative mat made of willow twigs, shrub branches, and reed stalks will not only protect, but also decorate the garden. Such "decorations" will protect both from weather changes and other unpleasant natural phenomena - damage to the bark by hares and other small rodents.
And frosts do not care
In the future, grafting with a more hardy variety will help increase the frost resistance of trees in your garden. Also, a tree that has already been damaged by a burn can be saved by grafting, for example, by wild growth or by "grafting with a bridge". But first, it is necessary to take measures to treat the wound - cleaning and disinfection. Often, annual trees are planted with the affected specimens. This helps to restore the vital activity of a good fruiting variety.
