Broccoli is the close sister of cauliflower. However, this subspecies is distinguished by a higher yield, surpasses its colored relative in nutritional properties and the taste of this asparagus variety is richer, and it is much easier to grow it. In addition, unlike the colored one, not only the dense green heads of broccoli inflorescences are eaten, but also the entire length of the lower part of the shoots. And the lateral shoots, although smaller than the central one, still continue to form on the plant throughout the growing season, which is quite profitable and the crop can be harvested several times

Preparing soil mixture and broccoli seeds for planting

They begin to compile a nutrient substrate a day or two before the scheduled time for planting seeds for seedlings. This is necessary in order to pre-treat the soil mixture with a hot solution of potassium permanganate, and then with fungicides.

To prepare a nutrient substrate, you will need the following ingredients:

• sod land - 4 parts;

• humus - 8 parts;

• sand - 1 part.

Also, to compose a soil mixture, you can use sod land, humus, peat in equal parts with a small amount of sand. In addition, 1 glass of ash is added to 1 bucket of nutrient substrate.

What preparation is required for seed depends on the form in which they are marketed by the manufacturer. To do this, pay attention to the packaging: if it is indicated that the seeds are treated with growth stimulants, any fungicides, it is not necessary to soak them again in solutions. Also, the fact that the seed was processed is evidenced by the unnatural color of the seeds - blue, light blue.

When clean, untreated seeds fall into the hands of a gardener, first of all, they are prevented in a hot solution of potassium permanganate. After such a bath, they are rinsed with clean water and treated with a growth stimulant.

Sowing broccoli seedlings

Broccoli seedlings are grown in two ways: with and without a pick. If you land without a pick, it is recommended to choose cups with drainage holes and equipped with pallets. When the cups are deep, they are filled with soil mixture no more than half.

The seeds are sown to a depth of approximately 1 cm and the containers are hidden under a plastic cover to create a greenhouse environment, and then removed to a warm place. At a temperature of about + 20 … + 22 degrees C, seedlings will appear in about three days. If the thermometer freezes at around + 15 … + 17 degrees C, the seedlings will appear in about a week. In the future, as the seedlings grow, a nutritious substrate is added so that the plants do not stretch out.

When they plan to pick broccoli seedlings, in order to save free space in the greenhouse or room conditions, the seeds are sown in a common container. Such containers do not always have drainage holes, so it is advisable to arrange a drainage layer of sand at the bottom. The soil is leveled and, at a distance of about 3 cm, the grooves for sowing are pushed with a pencil or ruler. In them, the seeds are laid out at a distance of about 1-2 cm. Care consists in regular watering as the earth dries up.

Two weeks after the appearance of seedlings on the surface of the soil, in addition to two cotyledonous leaves, they should have one more real one. In this phase, they begin to pick the seedlings. The day before this procedure, the seedlings need to be watered, and also filled with soil in a container into which the pick will be carried out. Seedlings are transplanted into a moist soil mixture. The seedlings are tightly squeezed with a fresh substrate, and then another watering is carried out. In the first days after the pick, the seedling pots are hidden under cover from direct sunlight.
