The red onion (some call it purple or lilac) is perhaps the tastiest. Although one can argue with this, it is difficult to argue with the fact that it looks very interesting in dishes, gives piquancy and unusualness
And red onions are just a storehouse of various vitamins and minerals. Therefore, it is worth highlighting at least a small bed in 2-3 rows on our garden plot for it. Trust me, you won't regret it.
Growing red onions
Red onions, like any other, can be grown by seeds or seedlings. The choice of the method is determined by the ripening period of a particular variety, there are those in which the ripening period is 150-170 days, which means that it is better not to plant them with seeds.
Sowing with seeds: seeds are planted in the soil, pre-soaked for several hours (from three to five) for better germination. Then the seed must be disinfected by keeping it in a solution of potassium permanganate for about eight hours. Then you can sow into the soil. Landing in open ground is carried out in early May.
With the seedling method, we plant the onions in seedling containers after mid-March. Seedlings will appear in about two weeks, sometimes earlier. After sprouting, be sure to provide additional lighting for the plants, otherwise the onion will stretch up and the seedlings will be very weak. At the beginning of May, you need to start hardening the onion, taking it outside during the day. Closer to mid-May, you can plant it in the garden.
During the period of active growth, red onions (like any other) require careful watering, it is advisable not to allow the soil to dry out, otherwise the resulting crop will be small and bitter. But during the ripening period, the soil should be dry, watering will no longer be needed.
After ripening, dig up the onions, cut off the dried feathers, dry them in a well-ventilated place, but not in direct sunlight, and store them in a cool dry place.
By the way, keep in mind that the size of the bulb depends not only on the soil, watering and sun, but also on the green mass, so the more often you pluck the feathers, the smaller the bulb will be.
Why are red onions good for you?
I want to say again that red onion contains a large amount of vitamins and minerals. This onion contains ascorbic acid, vitamin A, all B vitamins and even vitamin PP. And purple onions are also rich in iron, chromium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium and even sulfur. In general, it has almost everything that a person needs for health.
Well, in addition to vitamins and minerals in purple onions, you will find quertecin and anthocyanins. By the way, it is because of quertecin that red onions are considered a diuretic and antispasmodic. But only this property is manifested with the regular use of this product in food, since quertecin must accumulate in the body in sufficient quantities to begin "treatment".
The vitamin complex and antioxidants contained in red onions will help slow down the aging process, lower cholesterol (by the way, if onions are consumed daily for forty days, then during this period the amount of "bad" cholesterol in the body will decrease by a quarter!), Prevent the development of diabetes mellitus … It is believed that these substances also slow down the development of cancer.
Contraindications
The bow is, of course, good. But even this common plant has contraindications for use. Please, before eating onions, consult your doctor if you have the following diseases: colitis, impaired renal function, any liver disease, skin problems, stomach diseases in the acute stage.
