The benefits of green onions are undeniable. Everyone knows that its use increases immunity, enriches the body with vitamins, and has a beneficial effect on digestion processes. Promotes the acceleration of metabolism and the production of gastric juice, and also improves blood composition, normalizes the level of hemoglobin, and has a positive effect on the condition of the teeth. Helps fight viral infections and colds. Experts say that the most expensive part of the feather is its base - 10 cm from the bulb. This part contains all the most useful: vitamins, essential oils, organic acids
Certainly your product will be more useful. In the absence of a summer cottage or in the cold season, you can easily grow delicious onions on the windowsill. For this, it will be useful to know some tricks.
Bulb selection
For abundant greenery, choose a good onion. It should be rot-free, firm to the touch, shiny and round. The number of feathers depends on the root calyx, its development and width proportionally affect the yield.
Sprouted specimens give "fast" greens, they are ideal planting material. It is not difficult to get them in the vegetable departments of any store, especially at the end of winter. If there are no shoots, then the cutting method is used. The upper part of the head is cut parallel to the bottom along the shoulders. The pre-soaked onions begin to grow quickly.
Conditions for growing onions
There are four factors that influence the end result of an agronomic effort:
- temperature conditions;
- lighting;
-the soil;
- watering.
The soil should be loose, it is better to purchase it in specialized stores. If desired, it can be grown in sawdust, toilet paper, substrates, mineral wool, in artificial plant mixtures.
In the summertime, there is enough light for normal growth. In late autumn and on winter days, the lack of lighting negatively affects the sprouts - they become thin, pale, watery. Therefore, during this period it is necessary to think over additional illumination. Watering is needed only when grown in the ground. Lack of moisture makes the feather dryish and an excess of pungency appears.
The end result largely depends on the temperature characteristics of the room in which the onion is grown. The best option is + 25 … + 27, in such conditions the greenery reaches 25-30 cm in two weeks. At low rates, the vegetation slows down, the feather grows back slowly. Therefore, it is wiser to place seedlings in a place where there is a comfortable temperature than to arrange additional heating.
Ways to grow onions on a windowsill
The easiest way is to grow in water
The bulbs can be planted in a single method in plastic cups, glass jars. It is more productive to use a wide flat container. For example, a bowl, a plastic tray. It is important to create conditions for moisturizing only the root system, since the head itself, with constant contact with water, begins to rot, emitting an unpleasant odor. For this, a retainer is made to prevent complete immersion in water. Holes for the bottom are cut in a plastic lid or cardboard and the selected container is covered with this device.
The second method is forcing in the ground
It is considered more complex, but more productive, giving a more juicy and tasty feather. This option requires a container for the earth (box, tray, container for mini beds). The pre-soaked bulbs are planted back-to-back without being deeply buried. Only the lower part should be in the ground, it is enough to deepen only 1-2 cm.
The third way is vertical
Always surprises guests and is an interesting design solution. Another plus is the lack of land, cleanliness on the windowsill. A two-five-liter plastic bottle is cut off, holes are made to the very top. Bulbs are placed in them, then the inside is filled with any material that absorbs water (mineral wool, toilet paper, napkins). The finished "bed" can be hung or simply put on the windowsill. This option requires frequent watering, but it saves space and looks beautiful.
Having chosen the optimal solution, you can independently grow delicious, juicy onions on the windowsill. Such a product is good for health, since it will not contain harmful substances used in industrial production.
