My acquaintance with coreopsis took place 10 years ago. Choosing plants for my garden from catalogs, I stumbled upon an unusual flower with a very original color. I could not resist and decided to try it in business. What grew out of seeds exceeded all my expectations.
Appearance
Among coreopsis, there are both perennials and annuals. My copy turned out to be from the second group. But at the same time, he tried so hard to please with his beauty that I never ceased to be amazed at the variety of colors and shapes.
Small inflorescences are most often found in a two-color suit: burgundy with a yellow edge, orange with a cherry center, dark red with white tips. There are simpler specimens: pure yellow, red, cherry.
The flower looks very elegant on strong stems, surrounded by very delicate, thinly dissected foliage of bright green color. Plant height from 30 to 60 cm.
Inflorescences begin to bloom in mid-June and are pleasing to the eye until frost.
Reproduction
For annuals, only the seed method is used through seedlings or directly by sowing in open ground. In the second option, flowering begins a little later.
Since autumn, I have been digging the ground under the nursery, I put arcs. In early spring, in early April, I stretch the film. The greenhouse warms up for a week. Then I loosen the soil with a rake. I cut grooves 0.5 cm deep, spill it with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. I warm up the water for these purposes a little.
I distribute the seeds evenly, lightly sprinkle with soil. I seal the surface with my hand so that no voids remain. So the seedlings are more friendly.
After 1, 5-2 weeks, the first seedlings appear. Within a month I grow them under a film. As necessary, watering with water alternates with fertilizing with complex fertilizers.
A month later, on cloudy days and in the evening hours, I try to accustom them to the conditions of open ground, opening a shelter for several hours. Then I completely remove it. After 3 days, the seedlings are ready to be transplanted to a permanent place.
In the southern regions, the heat comes earlier, therefore, the seeds are sown at the same time on the flower beds, bypassing the nurseries.
Preferences and care
Coreopsis dyeing is not picky about the fertility and texture of the soil. It grows on almost any soil. The exception is wetlands and lowlands with a close standing of groundwater. Loves sunny glades, but withstands light partial shade.
It needs watering only during severe and prolonged drought. They are fed twice a season: during transplantation to a flower bed and at the beginning of flowering. Excessive nutrition leads to the growth of green mass to the detriment of flowering.
When transplanted into open ground, young plants are not divided into separate specimens. Bushes, planted in 2-3 pieces in one hole, look more beautiful, in small arrays at a distance of 15 cm from each other. This creates the effect of one lush bush with many different shades of inflorescences.
To strengthen and prolong the flowering period, dry bolls are promptly removed.
Some growers claim that then the plants reproduce by self-sowing every year. I've never had this. The fallen seeds did not germinate in the spring. Maybe this happens only in the southern regions with less severe winters than ours.
Place in the garden
Coreopsis is planted both in single compositions against the background of a mowed lawn, and in mixed plantings. Depending on the height of the variety, it is placed either in front of tall plants (delphinium, foxglove, kosmeya), or in the background of undersized specimens (gatsania, sedum yellow).
Dwarf varieties are suitable for planting in flowerpots, pots, balcony boxes.
