Rogulnik has several different names - water chestnut, chillim, damn nut, and water walnut. The name of this plant is due to the bizarre structure of the fruits - on their ripe drupes there are curved and rather hard outgrowths that resemble horns in their shape. Rogulnik is very popular in many countries for its unusually tasty fruits. In addition, it serves as a rather spectacular decoration for various reservoirs

Getting to know the plant

Previously, the rogulnik belonged to the family of the same name Rogulnikovye, and now it is ranked among the Derbennikovy family. It can be both annual and perennial.

Rogulnik is a stalks slowly floating in the water, the roots of which are attached to the bottom like anchors. They are fastened either with a brownish filamentous root, or with the help of last year's nuts. If the water level rises significantly, which often happens during high water, then the plants floating on the water surface can come off. At the same time, they will not die, but will continue to calmly swim on the water surface. And when their roots are in shallow water and come into contact with the ground, the rogue will take root again.

On the stalks of this aquatic inhabitant there are leaves that fall off rather quickly and are very thin, like strings. And on the water surface, one or more rosettes in the form of slightly serrated leaves are formed at the rogulnik. Due to the unequal length of the petioles, they are characterized by a rather chaotic arrangement. The aforementioned petioles contain air-filled cavities - thanks to them, the rosettes remain on the water surface and do not sink.

The flowers of the rogulnik are single, with transparent or white petals. This beauty usually blooms in May or June.

The fruits of the rogulnik look quite funny and represent one drupe-like seed of a blackish-brown hue. On the surface of all fruits, small growths resembling bent horns are located. Ripe fruits caught in the silt do not lose their properties, including germination, for at least ten years.

The main habitat of the roguer is Africa and Europe. And on the territory of Ukraine and Russia, you can meet this aquatic inhabitant in the lower reaches of the Dnieper, Don, Volga and Bug rivers. Also, water walnut grows in the Caucasus, Siberia and the Far East.

Using the flyer

Rogulnik, due to its excellent taste, was appreciated in ancient times - it was eaten with pleasure. This plant was also used to make flour replacing bread, grinding the fruits with the help of special hand mills. The kernels of the flyer contain about fifty percent starch. They can be eaten not only raw, but whole cooked, and even canned. They can also be baked over the fire and added to salads.

Flyer is widely cultivated in India, Japan and China. He gained particular popularity in India, where amazingly tasty cakes and amazing stews are made from the plant ground into flour. Such dishes with spices are incredibly tasty. Round bread is very much like wheat bread.

The roguelike is also used to treat a number of various diseases. When consumed fresh, it cures kidney disease, impotence and dyspepsia. Freshly squeezed rogulnik juice is used for eye diseases. And also this plant has a powerful antiviral effect and is used as an antiseptic.

How to grow

Heated standing and fresh water is ideal for the development of the flyer. It propagates by seeds - the fruits acquired in the spring are simply enough to throw into the water. If there is no soil in the reservoir, then the fruits can be placed in containers and drowned in this form.

In winter, the flyer is kept in a jar of water in the refrigerator, while closer to spring it begins to sprout on its own.

In general, the bagel is not stored very well at home. It should be stored in cool places unpeeled (peeled nuts lose their taste in a couple of days). And in order to fully appreciate the juicy taste of the fruit, nuts are best consumed immediately after removing the shells.
