Watermelon is propagated both by sowing seeds and growing through seedlings. Each of these methods has its own characteristics. You also need to know about the intricacies of caring for watermelons in the beds in the open field, so that the fruits are large and tasty
Curtains for watermelons from corn and sunflower
If, along with other garden crops, such tall plants as sunflowers or corn grow in your beds, this is a great place to plant a watermelon next to them. This method of sowing gourds is called the curtain, because tall neighbors, like a curtain, protect thermophilic watermelons from both cold winds and dry winds that pull and damage the lashes. In addition, a more favorable microclimate is created in the interculis zone than in a completely open area: here the humidity will be higher, and on hot days the temperature is slightly lower.
Powder lashes from the wind
When it is not possible to use such curtains, watermelons need additional supervision and care. So that gusts of wind do not move the whips from place to place, do not twist or turn them over, you need to dust the plants. When this trick is not used in your garden, the leaves often break off when twisting the lashes, and this negatively affects both the speed of plant development and the yield.
Why flip the watermelon
If it is not recommended to pull the whips, then the fruits themselves need to be turned. It has been noticed that even a single turning of the watermelon on the barrel can increase the yield by 15 to 40%. This agricultural practice will help to avoid fruit podoprevanie and improve ripening. The pumpkin must be turned over before it ripens. This is done in such a way that the side that was on top is this time on the side or bottom.
"Pinch" the watermelon
Basically, those fruits ripen, which are tied on lashes up to 20 internodes. The rest of the specimens either fall off or do not mature. But the plant still spends its energy on them. Therefore, it is recommended to pinch the lashes. To do this, pinch the apical buds over the 5th leaf, when the length of the lash reaches a length of about 0.8 m. This technique will accelerate fruiting, and also significantly increase the yield.
The optimal moment for pinching is the process of the second loosening of the soil in the nests. At the same time, the apical growth points can be removed. According to experts, if you pinch the whips and leave only 3 fruits on one watermelon plant, the total yield will increase by a third.
Seedling method of growing watermelons
In regions with a shorter warm season, watermelons are grown through seedlings. This allows not only to get a harvest, but also to increase its amount, as well as to harvest ripe fruits earlier than usual. With this method, planting of seedlings is carried out in a nesting way, two plants in each hole.
Turf is good for growing seedlings. To do this, the collected sod layer of earth is cut into small pieces of approximately 8 x 8 cm. The thickness of such a seedling "pot" should be about 6 cm. For sowing seeds, do not make a hole in the sod; it is better to plant seeds in the soil from the opposite side of the herbaceous part. So the cut squares will not fall apart, and the seedlings will then take root better in the garden bed.
Distinctive features of ripe fruits
The peculiarity of watermelons is that they should not be removed from the beds unripe. When stored, they do not ripen well on their own. How do you recognize that sweet flesh has already ripened under the thick peel? To do this, you need to know by what signs the degree of readiness of the fetus to be eaten is determined:
• a ripe fruit, when tapped with a finger on the peel, will emit a muffled sound, while an unripe one responds loudly;
• the antennae on the opposite side of the peduncle must be dried up;
• the stalk itself becomes thin;
• the bark of the watermelon acquires a characteristic color for the variety;
• a yellow earthen spot appears on the side.
