Tomato pests - such a problem can be very important, so all gardeners are advised to always be on the lookout and carefully examine their own plants. In this article we will talk about what tomato pests exist and how to deal with them correctly and in a timely manner
The so-called whitefly on tomatoes will become a very dangerous pest. This insect is rather small in size, its length is approximately one millimeter, the color of the insect is yellow, and the wings are white. This pest came to us from the tropics, therefore, for the full development of such a pest, appropriate conditions will be required - humidity and heat. Therefore, such a pest will infect those plants that grow in greenhouses. These insects can feed on a wide variety of plants, including dandelions, woodlice and sow thistles. All this helps the pest to escape hunger during the fall. These pests lay eggs on the inside of the leaf; young whiteflies can be 0.3 millimeters long.
Already immediately after birth, whiteflies will stick to the leaf and begin to feed on it. This pest has a very light green color, which makes it difficult to spot the whitefly. These pests multiply very quickly, so several different age groups can simultaneously exist on one tomato bush. It is for this reason that the fight against whiteflies is very difficult. Such insects, among other things, can become carriers of various infections, which also causes very significant harm to tomatoes.
To prevent tomatoes from entering the greenhouse, you will need to cover all the ventilation holes with gauze. In addition, it is recommended to regularly destroy the weeds on which these pests live. In this case, yellow sticky traps also help, where these pests can stick.
The spider mite is the most dangerous pest of the tomato. Mass reproduction of this pest occurs in especially hot weather. The spider mite will inhabit the lower part of the leaves, this mite envelops the leaves in a very thin cobweb. The pest feeds on cell sap, which blocks the access of nutrients to the leaves and the fruits of this plant. Over time, the leaves of a tomato bush become marbled in color, and over time they dry out.
In the greenhouse, high humidity should be observed and weeds should be regularly destroyed, which can prevent the appearance of such a spider mite. If the area of infection is not high, then it is recommended to spray the plants with infusion of garlic or onions. To do this, you need to insist 200 grams of husk in a liter of water. In the event of a mass infection, it will be necessary to purchase chemical preparations.
Gall nematodes - these pests are quite small, but they are very numerous. One female can lay up to two thousand eggs. Depending on the type of pest, they can infect various parts of the plant itself: like stems, roots, leaves and even seeds. Such a pest will damage the tissues of the tomato, and feed on their nutrients. The pest will accumulate in huge numbers in the ground if you plant tomatoes in the same place every year. Pests are able to form thickenings in the roots, which occurs when eggs are laid in them. In this case, the roots will no longer be able to perform all the functions that should have been assigned to them initially. At the very beginning, such a disease cannot be noticed, but after a while the disease will spread on a massive scale. Among other things, such an affected plant has a very weak immunity, which will become fertile ground for the development of other diseases.
Crop rotation will be a good method of preventive control of such pests. Weeds must be constantly removed, and sowing garlic or cabbage will also be a good way to fight, because pests are not able to feed on these crops. Watering with hot water will quite effectively fight this pest. After watering, cover the plants with foil for several hours.
