A bit of history
The sweetish path is popularly called "magic fruit", "wonderful berry". Scientific - only scientists know synsepalum. What are the reasons for such unusual names of this plant?
During an expedition in 1725, the French explorer R. D. Marchais discovered an unusual tree in West Africa. Its fruits had the unique properties of "transforming" sour, salty foods into sweet ones. The locals used the berries to improve the taste of wine and stale food. Bitter food remains unchanged.
"Magic" is possessed by the substance miraculin, which is part of the plant. It is a substitute for sugar, "blocks" for a while (from 1 to 1, 5 hours) taste buds. After eating a few pouria berries, any food seems sweetish, while the aroma of the original product remains unchanged.
Biology
In the wild, an adult tree reaches a height of 4-5 meters, in indoor conditions it does not exceed 1.5 meters. Differs in slow growth. In a year, the increase is 4-8 cm. The crown of a five-year-old seedling is only 50 cm.
The stem is branched. Leathery, smooth, rich green oval-shaped leaves are located on the branches in a spiral.
The evergreen synsepalum blooms and bears fruit throughout the year. Flowers and berries at different levels can be observed on the plant at the same time.
Inflorescences are small, white with a pleasant smell, bisexual. One plant is enough to successfully set berries. To increase the amount of yield, artificial pollination is additionally used.
After a month, oblong red fruits ripen no more than 3 cm long. They cannot be stored. Dried berries lose their "magical properties" due to protein breakdown during heat treatment. They are eaten fresh. They are tasteless and odorless.
Inside each berry there is a small pit. Its size is comparable to a coffee bean. She gives rise to a new plant. Loses germination quickly. Therefore, seeds that have just been selected from the pulp are used for planting.
Conditions of detention
A humid climate is most suitable for a sweetish path. It is recommended to maintain this indicator at the level of 50-55% in winter, and 65-70% in summer. In a room, this effect is achieved in several ways:
1. Place the plants in an aquarium with a rock drainage layer. A little water is added to the bottom, below the level of the pot. Cover with glass from above.
2. Construct a wire frame, stretch a plastic bag. The edges are fixed.
3. Place a humidifier next to the tree.
4. Spray the flower with a spray bottle several times a day.
5. Place several wide containers of water on the windowsill.
In the first and second cases, once a day, the plants are ventilated, removing the shelter for a while.
"Magic fruit" is thermophilic. In winter, the optimum temperature for keeping is 20-22 degrees, in summer it is 5 degrees higher. Heat and humidity are the most important conditions for growing synsepalum. Deviation from the norm threatens the death of trees. Negatively refers to drafts.
Soils are preferable slightly acidic, loose with the addition of peat, sand, moss, perlite. The alkaline reaction of the soil is destructive for him. At the bottom of the pot, a drainage layer of expanded clay and several holes are placed so that the roots do not rot from excess water.
The plant loves scattered sunlight or weak partial shade. The eastern location is considered the best option. On the southern windows, the track is shaded at midday.
