A good owner begins to take care of the future harvest in advance: in the previous season. Onions have not yet been selected from the beds this year, but you already need to think about what, how and where to place in the next. It is also important to know how to store the seedlings correctly so that the crop grown from it does not disappoint with its quality

Sevka preparation for storage

They begin to pull out the sevka from the beds in August, when its feather begins to lodge en masse. Unlike ripened turnip onions, which take less than a week to dry well, sevka for this will take at least 3 weeks, or even a whole month. In dry weather, the bulbs are left in the open sun. And in the rain, you cannot leave it in the fresh air, even under a canopy - it must be hidden in a ventilated room.

The readiness of a set for storage is determined by its appearance. The neck should become thin and dry, and the bulb should also be completely covered with dry scales. Until the seed has reached such a condition, there is a danger that it will be affected by cervical rot during storage. Therefore, it is impossible to rush to bookmark, so as not to lose planting material and not be left without a crop next year.

Storage methods for sevka

Dried sets must be sorted by size. This is important both for the choice of storage method and planting time. Store sevok in a cold and warm way. For small specimens, the diameter of which is up to 1 cm, only colder storage at a temperature of about 1 ° C is recommended (in the refrigerator or boxes dug in the snow). If you keep it warm, it will lose even more in size, as it dries out a lot. Better yet, use such planting material for winter plantings.

The sevok is larger, with a bulb diameter of about 1, 5-2, 5 cm, suits both warm and cold storage. During warm storage, the temperature should be between +18 and + 25 ° C, and the relative humidity should be maintained at 50-70%. Cold storage assumes a relative humidity of 80-90%. Why is it so important to comply with these conditions? The fact is that by adhering to this technology, you will save the bow planted in spring from quickly throwing out the arrow.

Another method of preventing slinging and minimizing spoiled planting waste is called cold-warm storage. It lies in the fact that in the autumn and spring months, the set is kept warm, and with the arrival of winter frosts, it is moved to cold conditions. With this approach, a very high quality crop is also obtained, and the plants after planting in the soil do not shoot.

You should not plant the sevok immediately after taking it out of storage. Two weeks before the expected planting date, it must be warmed up. This will not only improve the quality of the turnips grown from it, but also increase resistance to diseases such as downy mildew and neck rot.

Selection and preparation of a site for seeding

In the current season, it is also worth taking care of the plot on which it is planned to cultivate onions next year. It is not recommended to place it in the same place where it grew earlier. And from the predecessors, cucumbers and tomatoes, early varieties of potatoes and white cabbage will be a good choice. You can also split the onion beds after the legumes.

Light fertile soils are suitable for onions, but he does not like it when manure is introduced under it on the site - this reduces its keeping quality. It is better to apply such an organic fertilizer under the predecessors. The preparation of loamy areas includes liming the soil. It will also be useful to add wood ash to the soil at the rate of 1 bucket per 15 square meters. area.
