The Latin name "Abutilon" (Abutilon) hides an evergreen plant, which we call "Kanatnik". Its decorative varieties, which are more often grown as indoor plants, are called "Indoor Maple" for the similarity of leaves to maple. Bell-shaped flowers, similar to bright bowls, give the plant decorativeness
Decorative hybrids
Of the two hundred plant species, among which there are grasses, annuals and perennials, shrubs and even small trees, only a dozen are used for decorative purposes. Hybrid forms and varieties are mainly grown as indoor plants.
•
Abutilon Darwin (Abutilon darvinii) is a two-meter shrub with three-lobed maple leaves and large single flowers (up to 5 cm in diameter), which bloom in summer and have an orange color with red veins. Sometimes flowers cluster together, forming a brush of three pieces.
•
Abutilone striped (Abutilon striatum) is a shrub that has outgrown its brother, Abutilon Darwin, by half a meter. Its red-orange flowers are covered with dark veins and leave the bush only in winter. In hybrids of this species, they have small green leaves decorated with a yellow pattern.
•
Abutilon hybrid (Abutilon x hybridum) - a two-meter branched shrub obtained by crossing Abutilon Darwin with Abutilon striped. The four-centimeter flowers are colored red, orange and yellow. Flowers firmly hold on to the branches, decorating the shrub throughout the growing season. Hybrids of this species have flowers with red, yellow and white color, and some have variegated leaves with a white border around the edge.
•
Abutilon megapotamskiy (Abutilon megapotamicum) is a kind of giant cubic bush that grows in width and height up to 2-2, 5 meters. During the active period, powerful branches bend under the weight of leaves and numerous drooping flowers, the petals of which are yellow and the sepals are red. Has a hybrid with leaves on which nature has painted a yellow pattern.
•
Abutilon Ocean (Abutilon oscheni) is the most winter-hardy of all shrubs of this species. But it also does not withstand our harsh winters, and therefore it should be kept indoors in winter. Flowers of this species are colored blue-violet.
•
Abutilon grape-leaved (Abutilon vitifolium) is a giant that grows up to 5 meters in height. The leaves of the plant resemble the leaves of grapes, and its blue flowers hold tightly in the axillary clusters, decorating the bush from May until the arrival of frost. Has a variety called "White" because of the white color of the flowers.
Growing
In areas with a warm climate, abutilons are grown in the open field, where they can demonstrate their real size. When abutilones are grown as a pot culture, they grow much more modestly. But, unfortunately, in the conditions of cold winters, only the potted cultivation option remains.
Before planting the plant in a pot, a drainage layer of pebbles is arranged at the bottom of the pot, and only after that a mixture of sand and peat is poured (in a ratio of 1: 1), or soil from peat, adding sand to it. With the annual transplantation of a plant from a pot that has become small, the soil is enriched with the main mineral fertilizer, adding 30-40 grams of fertilizer to 10 liters of water.
Watering during the active growing season is done often, adding liquid fertilizer to the water once every two weeks. In winter they rarely watered.
Abutilons prefer lighted places, but they also tolerate partial shade.
To maintain the appearance of abutilones, dried leaves and wilted flowers are removed. In the spring, the shoots are shortened and the parts of the plant damaged by the cold are cut out.
The plant is propagated by spring sowing of seeds. Hybrid forms and varieties are propagated by cuttings.
Diseases and pests
Plant leaves can be damaged by worms. And on the sticky pad they release, fungal rabble can take root.
