Today there is no need to sow flax in spring in your summer cottage in order to prepare new things for the whole family for Christmas. Shop shelves are filled with all kinds of fabrics, including linen. But to decorate a flower garden, rocky garden or border with delicate blue flax flowers is available to everyone. Moreover, decorative flax varieties today are not limited to one heavenly color, but offer many other bright and delicate tones

Multicolor linen

More than two hundred species of herbaceous and semi-shrub plants, perennials and annuals, belong to the genus Linum. They have a modest appearance: simple sessile leaves and unpretentious, but very delicate and touching, funnel-shaped flowers, collected in inflorescences. Depending on the type of flax, the flowers can be white, light blue, blue, yellow, red, or colored in various intermediate shades.

Popular types of flax

Flax ordinary (Linum usitatissimum) - An annual plant known for its uses. It has two subspecies: 1) ordinary (Linum vulgare), from which textile fibers are made for the production of fabrics; 2) squat (Linum humile), which is grown to obtain seeds, and it is also interesting for gardeners as an ornamental plant.

Large-flowered flax (Linum grandiflorum) is a graceful annual plant that grows up to 40-50 centimeters. In June-July, bright red flowers bloom. The diameter of the flowers is 2 centimeters. The leaves are lanceolate. There are varieties of this species with purple and pink flowers.

Linen Narbon (Linum narbonense) is a medium-sized perennial plant 40 centimeters high with relatively large (3-4 cm in diameter) dark blue flowers.

Perennial flax (Linum perenne) - medium and tall plant (up to 50-100 cm tall). In June-July, its numerous thin shoots with lanceolate-linear small leaves are covered with blue flowers with a light spot.

Growing

Blue flax loves the rays of the sun, helping him to copy the blue of the sky. But yellow flax can grow in partial shade.

Perennial flax species are winter-hardy, prefer moist soils, and therefore require regular watering. Annuals perfectly tolerate drought.

Flax loves fertile soil, fertilized with organic matter and mineral fertilizers, with good drainage. During spring watering, a complex fertilizer is periodically added to the water (10 ml per 10 liters of water).

Perennial flax is not very durable and requires planting renewal every 3-5 years. The plant is propagated by sowing seeds.

Usage

Perennial types of flax are used for decorative flower beds, in rocky gardens, for creating borders.

Large-flowered annual flax is planted in pots to decorate verandas and balconies.

To maintain the appearance of the flower garden, the plant is usually cut after flowering.
