Tiarella polyphylla (lat. Tiarella polyphylla) - decorative culture; a representative of the genus Tiarella of the Saxifrage family. It is a native of the subtropical forests of eastern countries, including Japan and China. The species is not winter-hardy enough, but under the condition of good shelter it winters even in regions with cold winters.
Characteristics of culture
Tiarella multifoliate is presented in the form of herbaceous low-growing plants with lobed leaves, rounded in outline and pink flowers, collected in graceful racemose inflorescences, developing at a height of 40-50 cm. The rosettes of leaves themselves do not exceed 20 cm in height. Tiarella multifoliate is one of the shade-tolerant plants that can decorate any inconspicuous corner of the garden. She is unpretentious, caring for her does not take much time.
Tiarella is ideal for those gardeners and florists who do not have much gardening experience and do not have enough time to care for their garden dwellers. After all, thiarella is unpretentious and resistant to diseases and pests, and its lush rosettes can suppress the growth of weeds and retain moisture in the soil for a longer period.
Thiarella is also undemanding to soil conditions, but nevertheless it develops better on moisture-consuming, loose, drained, permeable, neutral, slightly alkaline or slightly acidic soils. On porous and sandy soils, plants feel defective without enough moisture. Lack of moisture will affect the development of culture and flowering. In addition to watering, periodic hilling is important for tiarella. The fact is that as it grows, the base of the outlet is exposed, as a result, the bushes lose their decorative effect.
As already mentioned, the multifoliate thiarella cannot be called a frost-resistant crop; it should be covered for the winter. In the spring, the shelter in the form of a thick layer of dry foliage or peat is removed, but not immediately, because during the melting of the snow, the foliage of the plants begins to intensively evaporate moisture, which leads to dehydration, and subsequently to death. If you shade the plants for this time and regularly water, this problem can be avoided.
Reproduction
Thiarella multifoliate is propagated by seeds and vegetatively, the second method is used most often, especially since the rosettes of leaves grow strongly by 4-5 years and need to be divided. One bush is divided into 3-4 parts, the division is carried out with a sharp knife, pre-treated with a disinfecting solution.
The plots are immediately transplanted into planting pits measuring 20/30 * 20/30 cm, at the bottom of which a small hill is formed from a mixture made up of excavated soil, wood ash, compost and complex fertilizer. In the future, mineral fertilizers do not need to be applied, organic matter - once a year.
It is important to remember that division should be done before flowering. During flowering, this procedure cannot be carried out. The seed method is also effective, only it is used infrequently. Seeds are sown in open ground in April-May under the film. Seed preparation is not required. Since the seeds of tiarella are very small, they are mixed with washed river sand before sowing. So the seeds are distributed more evenly over the soil surface.
Use in the garden
Tiarella multifoliate, like heart-shaped tiarella, is used in ornamental gardening. She is good in both single and group plantings. It can be safely planted under the crowns of trees and large shrubs in alliance with heathers, bells, incense and cereals. Since thiarella is hygrophilous and does not tolerate drought, it is recommended to use it to decorate the shores of an artificial reservoir.
It will also be appropriate in rock gardens, rockeries and borders in compositions with heuchera, heycherella, ferns, hosts and astilbe. Tiarella will look great in conjunction with conifers. Thiarella is shade-loving and can be used for landscaping shady areas, such as behind tall buildings where there is very little sunlight. It should be noted that thiarella is durable, it is enough to carry out constant division, then the plants will delight with their beauty for decades.
